Is it crucial to take A&P I and II back to back??

Published

One of the nursing programs I am applying to has recently changed their pre-req's and added Intermediate Algebra, which I've only taken Elem. Algebra and received an A. I was hoping to test out of Intermediate Algebra but they will not let me. I'm currently registered for A&P 1 this semester, but since they now added more pre-req's I was thinking of switching and taking Intermediate Algebra this semester and then taking A&P 1 next semester and A&P 2 either the summer or the following Fall. My only concern is that I'm also applying to another school and I have all the pre-req's finished for that school, but it uses a points system for GPA, placement test scores and references. I'm debating if my A&P 1 grade would be more beneficial for my transcript than Inter. Algebra for that particular program?

You do not need to take them back to back AP1 and AP2 cover different systems in the body and there is very little overlap. However, I would not recommend taking either of these classes in the summer. There is so much information to squeeze into the summer session and most people I have talked to ended up with a lower grade than they intended just because of the speed (one of my friends had 4 tests in 3 weeks) :nailbiting:. Good luck

I agree, they are different topics but would recommend the science over the math. To admissions, the sciences weigh more. However, I do recommend a summer class.. only because you get it done quickly. I just took A&P II, finished on Wednesday with a B

I had a quiz every week, and the last week I had a quiz and a final. To some that seems like a lot, but to me... having a quiz weekly kept the material fresh in my mind. I prefer the summer courses over the regular any day.... but everyone is different

I just finished summer A&P 2 with an A, so it can be done. You have to be prepared to put in a LOT of time studying though. A lot of my classmates didn't and ended up with C's or not passing at all, after previously getting A's in A&P I. It is a LOT of work in the summer though, and very stressful. If you don't 100% HAVE to take it in summer, I wouldn't. If you do, it is possible to get an A, but you are going to have to really work for it.

I had many classmates who had a year or more gap between A&P I and II and did fine.

However, A&P is most definitely going to look better than an algebra class when it comes to admissions.

The only thing I would be worried about is the time limit. For example, the college I am applying to the science courses cannot be older than 5 years. So, as long as you get them done in the time limit then your good(if your college has one). I wouldn't consider it crucial to take them back to back.

I took them about 8 years apart. Long story behind that, but suffice it to say that I still remembered most of it. I only had to review just a tad. Now I'm starting nursing school on the 21st!

My schools of choice also require those classes taken within 5 years of applying.

In regards to the intermediate Algebra, I would speak to admissions and try to schedule just the intermediate Algebra blocks on the entrance testing.

Maybe take some practice tests first. Intermediate Math (Pt 1) Accuplacer Practice Quiz Intermediate Math (Pt 2) Accuplacer Practice Quiz

It depends on how long your schools summer sessions are. At my school summer sessions are 10 weeks long instead of the regular 14 week semesters so I wasn't losing much time and I was still very successful in a & p and statistics this summer ( a & b ) but some schools have super quick summer semesters so it all depends on you. But I would definitely considers taking a & p back to back as its much more beneficial to you.

Thank you:) I'm going to take A&P 1 next semester and hit 2 in the summer if I get accepted into the ADN program Fall 2014. I'll still have to take micro but I might be able to knock that out during a summer session while I'm in the program. I retook the Math COMPASS last week and only studied over my Elem. Algebra notes and was 2 points from being placed in College Algebra so I'm watching videos on Khan Academy to hopefully get my grade up bc I'm going to retest next week.
