Is ATCN included in your credentials?

Published

So I'm a little confused about something...I've seen nurses put ATCN in with their credentials (RN, ATCN) but I'm not sure if that's right. I think if it were correct, then you would have to list all certifications (ie ACLS, TNCC, PALS) and that would be going overboard in my eyes and take up too many letters!

Let me know what you think...

Specializes in Emergency/Trauma/Education.

I agree with you Scott. ATCN is a course, just as ACLS, PALS, TNCC, etc. While those courses/classes can be included in the definition of "credentials", it does seem a little silly to have the alphabet of course completion cards on your ID. Because space is limited, our facility allows for licensure, highest degree and one certification on our badge.

Ima Nurse, RN

MSN, CEN

Note that a professional certification (CEN, CCRN, etc) is completely different than courses such as those mentioned above.

:twocents:

Specializes in ER, Trauma.

After awhile they become like boyscout merit badges and look silly. Legally I just sign RN, on everything else I just right RN, Etc. But then I've got a bad attitude anyway.

Specializes in Nephrology, Cardiology, ER, ICU.

Your degree is what counts, not the certifications.

Now, with that said, in IL we have a license for TNS which is Trauma Nurse Specialist. We also have a separate license for PHRN which is pre-hospital RN and we have a license for APN which is advanced practice nurse.

While I hold all these licenses, the only thing I sign is APN.
