I went through 2 years of school, I passed boards, never did I think I wouldn't be able to work when I was finished all of this!!! Upper Chesapeake and Harford Memorial aren't hiring new grads, only scholarship recipients and xterns...same with a lot of the other area hospitals...I am in Harford County. So I branched out-waiting a MONTH so far now to get a staff-interview at St. Joe's (and not 100% sure I even want to work there with all the issues surrounding that hospital). GBMC has no positions posted for new grads (experienced nurse only apply), so I looked into Bayview and JHopkins Medical...hopefully that will get me somewhere! I have a sitter job at Father Martin Ashley's Rehab but they have no RN positions to move me into. Applied today for a SAR with Genesis....fingers crossed! There are a few positions in LTC but the pay is a lot less and the shifts are only 8 hours
What is a new grad to do??

What a shame your school didn't encourage you to line up a new grad program if possible long before graduation. Sounds like you are doing what you can. FWIW its my understanding that LTC pays better. Good luck.

Here's the story in the Baltimore Sun. Apparantly a particular doctor (who is now gone) was putting stents in arteries that didn't need them:eek:

Thanks, and what a mess!
Yeah I want a job, and that job is PERFECT (critical care, on a unit I am familiar with, they use a documentation system I am a whiz at, etc.) but would u want to be a "part" of all that mess? I feel like I would love to contribute to it getting better and recovering from that mess, u know? I dunno.
I absolutely would! The mess that one doctor created for the hospital should not dampen the excellence of the rest of the hospital. I would be proud to work for St Joseph's and probably will when I graduate.
i think you should try to apply and see what happen. At least you weren't there when it happen.

Jen! I'm sorry you aren't having any luck! I'll keep my ears open at HMH if I hear anything about them changing their hiring status of new grads! Keeping my fingers crossed for you! And yeah, after all of that stuff with St. Joe's, I'd be hesitant to start out there too.

Just my two cents but for a new grad looking for work I'd be hesitant to turn my nose up at St. Joseph or any other facility willing to give me a chance. FWIW all hospitals have problems some just aren't made public but make no mistake they are happening.
Yes, I know that. That is why I said that I wanted to work there despite what is going on :)

It has been my experience, as well, that LTC/SNFs actually pay the same, if not better, than some hospitals.
I am a new grad (graduated in May 09) and am currently working in a SNF (Skilled nursing facility).
If you are looking for that "perfect" job and are able to hold out for it, then great.
If you need to start working asap.. I know of a company hiring new grads. But it is Skilled nursing/LTC. They have a new grad program (next class starts March 29th), and some of the facilities have a VERY high acuity of patients (Vent, etc).
Let me know if you're interested. I'd love to help out :)
