Irish nurse to USA, CA vs NYC?

Hi guys,

I am currently a general nurse with a BSC from Dublin Ireland and my goal is to get over to the USA to practice for a few years. I am wondering how I go about it as there seems like so much to go through, I am aware of the nclex and cgfns but where and what do I pick to get registered.

Also can somebody tell me where would be better to go first when starting out CA or NYC?

All other matters aside, neither CA or NYC are places where nursing jobs are easy to come by.

You may need to consider other places as CA and NY are probably the 2 hardest states to get in. Be aware that CA do their own assessment and many Internationally trained fail to meet requirements and at the moment you need a US SSN to submit paperwork and you can't get that until in the US with work/immigrant visa.

The hardest thing is finding employer willing to wait the x years to get the immigrant visa or take the rose with a work visa which most hospitals tend not to go for as $$$$

Take the time to research where you want to go and look at state requirements on the specific BON website.

It it generally these days isn't an easy process but if determined you plough through and bide time

The best way to land in CA is via a travel assignment.

Once you get your credentials and visa worked out, find a travel registry.

Securing a visa will likely be challenging because there is no shortage of nurses in the US, particularly in places like California.

Thanks for all your help. i have applied to the CVS as part of the cgfns for NYC. Once that comes through do i go ahead and try the NCLEX or can you do the nclex for nyc while waiting on the cgfns report?

NY will not let you sit NCLEX without reviewing your application
