Nurse from the North

  1. Greetings fellow colleagues,
I am nurse from Canada with 23 years experience in the long term care and geriatrics field. Looking forward to meeting many of you and "yakking" about work-related topics. Is every long term care facility experiencing the chaos that mine is? Staffing snarls and increasing overtime? Increasing numbers of residents with increasingly complicated medical problems and behaviors? Increasing numbers of residents' families that have behaviors too, treating all staff like we are the enemy? All departments in the facility looking down at the nursing staff at "ground zero" like they are inferior? There is no doubt that nursing for me when I started out is NOT the same as it has morphed into! And yet I love it still. I'm addicted to it. Please help...

    Oh, yeah.

I fell into LTC but I have to confess that I love it. My old farts are a truly undervalued, somewhat neglected and disreguarded population and my mother hen protective instincts have been fully aroused. I've become pretty passionate about making certain my folks are treated kindly, and with dignity.

    Hello and Welcome!

I myself would like to know more about long term care especially from those who have ate, slept and breathed it in for many, many years. I have worked in long term care a few times over the years and I have a very soft spot in my heart for the elderly. I am pondering a lot of things for when I graduate from RN school in May.

Glad to have people like you around me ewe!

AWWWW....ewe, you sound like a honey of a nurse! Thank goodness for peeps like you who choose to work LTC the entire career of their nursing days. I, too, have a huge soft spot in my heart for the elderly and chronically long term care pts. I, too, feel for them since they're at times totally dependent on staff for that "family" feeling of care providers since some are "dumped" and left for us to deal with, rarely if any visits, etc.
    God bless you ewe!
Have a blessed and safe holiday!
