1. I'm brand-new and would like to say "hello" to everyone. I'm a new LPN (about 4 mths.) and am just starting my upgrade to RN through Excelsior College online. What little I've seen has really overwhelmed me and I'm wondering if I can do this. Has anyone ever upgraded through this college? If so, I could certainly use some pointers, advice, etc. Looking forward to hear from some of you.

    Hi there,
I am new to this site so forgive any gross errors:-) I am upgrading through Excelsior as well and have 5 tests to complete before clinicals.I have not had any problems with it at all.The support has been great.I did however do all of my academics prior to entering the program. I have had to stop for a while due to life and lack of money but am now back on track with the hopes to finish this fall.Let me know if I can help!

Thanks for your input. I have 2 academics to take and one of those (Microbiology) I'm gonna take at the local community college because I just don't think I can swing that one on my own. I have 6 nursing concepts to take. How long did it take you to complete your nursing concepts?

App. 6 weeks per concept but I only used the study guide and the experience I was fortunate to have was what made the real difference.I floated for 2 years in a hospital before returning to geriatrics and was amazed at how I learned just from being in the environment.

Thanks for the info. Do the nursing concepts not have textbooks or did you just not need them? Any pointers on how to study? You mentioned the experience was very helpful. I've only been nursing 4 months but I'm hoping that will make it a little easier for me.

I just used the study guides w/o buying any extra texts.I would not change my basic study habits as they were good enough to get you through nursing school :-) You might have to slightly "modify" some as you will be doing this primarily on your own.Discipline is the key to this type of program.

One more question and I will leave you alone for now. With only 4 months of nursing experience, would you recommend that I buy the extra books and how many concepts exams have you taken already? Did you find that the study guide alone was all you needed to pass the test? Thanks so much for your help.:smiletea:

I have taken two concept tests with only the study guides. I think that it would vary with the individual and experience acquired whether or not you would need more texts. While I floated I worked ER,ICU and Acute care so I was exposed to a variety of situations which is basically what the tests are designed to do.You could always prepare with only the guide and if this left you uncomfortable then buying more material is always a option.

Good luck. Check out our Distance Learning forum here. There are several EC students there.
