I'm looking for help and advice as a UK trained paediatric nurse wanting to relocate to Florida. I would love to hear from any nurse who has made this transition and could give me an honest review of how it went. I'm not sure on the area I would want to live in yet (close-ish to Orlando).
I know I will need to do a conversion course to Adult Nursing (which will take some saving up and maybe even leaving my full time job at the moment??).
I'd love for people to get in contact and talk me through how it went.
Do you have a visa to get to the US that will allow you to work? There is an international forum and a UK forum where this kind of question has been asked before and you'll be able to read other people's stories. As you hit on it- your lack of hours in adult nursing, OB, mental health, etc etc will be a big hurdle to overcome, since nurses in the US don't specialize.
I'm not a Brit (trained in the US), but I have a UK license and have come across a lot in my readings over the years.
Hi thank you so much for spotting the thread and replying. I have no visa as I'm nowhere near the stage to come across yet (will need to retrain as an adult nurse first). Is the international/ UK forum on this site (I am new) as I will join those and read avidly!
Again thanks for your time and advice- I really do appreciate it!
Yes, it's on this site. Go to the top of this page and click on the "Nurses" tab (next "Specialties") and then click on "World Nursing" forum and there are forums dedicated to getting a US license and a specific UK nursing forum. Best of luck.
eta: Here's a thread posted recently from someone with a nursing degree in the UK with a psych specialization:
Unfortunately training as an adult nurse doesn't mean you will gain clinical and theory hours in everything required. Nurse Registration forum has a lot of discussion on US requirements so be aware the process may be long and frustrating. Your transcripts need to show clinical and theory hours in Paeds, Mental Health, Obstetrics and Adult
I can't speak to the UK, but I recently attended an RN refresher course with several nurses from out of country. The Philippines, Haiti, Nigeria and Puerto Rico ( which maybe doesn't count, idk ). All but one had attended all their nurses training in their respective countries and were asked to prove that. Then, they attended a refresher course and sat for Boards. If you do move to Orlando, look up Miller's College Of Nursing. You'll need to petition the Florida Board Of Nursing first, of course. Depending on when you plan to move, you could download the application and begin that process earlier. Once you go before the board, if they ask you to do the refresher, Dr. Miller helps a lot of nurses from other countries. Every scenario is different, it could be that the US and UK already have some sort of agreement in place between boards. But, if you are required to do some US training this may help. I know that two of the nurses ( Nigeria and Haiti ) have already passed boards and are seeking employment. Yay! Good Luck
