A lost soul in WEST VA..

  1. Hi i am new to this site.....found it by accident.....been living in W.V. now a little over a year......moved from Ocala, Fla..homesick bad...thought nurses could get jobs anywhere....wrong...i knew the pay was going to be different but this is ridiculous.....i work 17hrs a week for sil assist. living making l0.00 an hr..no raises and work only doing med passes.....losing all my skills.....the job market here for lpn's are horrible.....i was into home health in fla..and was very well received here no lpn's used in our home health care in our town.......also have experience in correctional nursing and love it love it........no job opportunity for me in that here either..12 hr. shifts or ll-7 is the one they want you to do..which is fine temp..but I LOVE 3-ll....thought that was the hardest to fill. not here........it's a different environment here i guess i was spoiled in Fla......here i thought i had great job opportunity and accepted a state position then to find out you have to be available all 3 shifts in the same work week.....no set schedule..i about died.......I have one son who is MR and our schedule with him is best for me on 3-ll...and hubby is otr driver........What a major wake up call for me in the mountains........oh yea the finances went from $l00 thousand to $l7 thousand in one year here....next week we file ch. 7.......omg i have lost everything including my outlook on nursing.........i hope to find some great insite and bring my love of nursing back with this web site..I feel like I am a waste as a nurse and I should just settle for working fast food......I have been in nursing 5yrs..and I am in my mid 40's....Is it to late for me to rekindle the drive..............thanks............

If i'm not mistaken, there's a few DD nursing positions in the southern wva area for a company called ResCare. There is some driving involved from house to house BUT the house are supposedly within a few miles of each other.

Thank you...Checked on Rescare none in our area..Closest is charleston..which is over an hr for me..yes i would be willing to drive house to house..we have 3 home care here and they don't use lpns.....was very surprised..they told me i would have more opportunity to be a cna than a lpn..here.....which i loved dearly as a cna for several years..in fla..just hate to go backwards with my career...and yes I am very much contemplating moving back to fla..next year..the jobs just aren't here like everyone in hubby's family thought....i am sure it will cause a big upset when we decide to move.his family is why we moved here due to illness but now our health and sanity are taking a toll...........I will keep searching and enjoying this site..This place is HUGE..........and i needed to find my calling again..LOL

In what city do you live in West Virginia? I live in Huntington and know where a few jobs are that I applied for but they wanted someone with experiance. I am a new grad. Also we had a career fair yesterday and there was several places that said they were hiring LPN's. If you live close to here I will be happy to share those places with you.

What kind of nurses does the Southern Regional Jail on Airport Road in Beckley hire?

There is a nursing home in Fayetteville and two nursing homes in Oak Hill. The one is off of rt. 19, south of the Main St. Oak Hill exit, the other is behind the old Oak Hill Wal-Mart.

Quite a few people that live in Fayetteville or Oak Hill drive to Beckley for work. There are (or was) two hospitals in Beckley: Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital (BARH) and Raleigh General Hospital . Raleigh General's website had LPN positions listed on their website that are open. So did BARH, BARH's starting hourly was $13.65 on the job posting.

Have you thought about working for a nursing agency? Good $ with flexibility.

    Good luck!

The last time I checked there wasnt a huge agency presence in that area. MSN did have some contracts. There are a lot of nursing jobs in that area although some hospitals arent hiring LPNs as much anymore but still there are usually jobs available. Despite the nursing shortage, we often dont have the perfect schedule due to the job requirements and many hospitals are going away from the 8 hour shifts.

The last time I checked, I think most of the hospitals were mainly doing 12 hour shifts. You may want to check the VA out in Beckley. For the most part the hardest shift to fill is evening shift in my experience in that area, but evening shift has been cut out quite a bit with 7a-7pm.

There is actually a prison in your county called Mount Olive. Have you checked into that? It may be about 30-45 minute drive though I am not sure. You also have the Southern Regional Jail which is probably 30 minutes from Oak Hill.

If you wanted to work in a nursing home I think a 3-11 shift would be quite easy to find. Good luck, dont get frustrated there are plenty of jobs out there although it is sometimes hard to work around family.

I'm not even sure ther are ANY agencies in that area, actually. Sometimes the overall attitude of the nursing managers is "well, you're stuck here because of your husband's coal mining job, so you'll put up with this place, because it's not like there's any other place in this area for you to go, and besides, you get fired or quit, there are 5 other people waiting". WVa really doesn't have a nursing shortage.

And for those that might read this and think that $13/hour is low pay, consider the area it comes from. The economy there is depressed. You can get a very nice house for $50,000. Rent for a two bedroom apt. might be $400.

Another suggestion for the OP is to look online for the Register Herald's classfieds section (the Beckley newspaper). Sometimes poostings for jobs in Oak Hill show up there.
