Introduction to Biology Help

Published

Hi I am taking an intro to biology course in the fall of 2011. I have never taken any type of science courses in a long time. I want to pass all of my science courses with A's to better my chances of getting into the program. Can some one please give me advice on what to do in order to get a head start on studying before classes start?

There really is no head start. Just read and read and read. Find a good study buddy when the class starts. I personally LOVE biology and got 103 in the class, but there was nothing I could have done before the class started that helped me get the grade I got.

If you took general bio in highschool and happened to keep your notes you could pull those out and review. We pretty much learned cell anatomy, difference between prokaryotes and eukaryotes, metabolic processes of the cell (such as cellular respiration and fermentation), DNA and RNA, the different types of RNA, the processes of replication, transcription, and translation. Nothing too complicated.

But I don't think you can get a head start, other than maybe familiarizing yourself with the organelles?

Thanks but I do not have any notes because I have been out of high school for a very long time.

I took bio last semester and passed with an A :) If you want to get a head start I would study the stages of mitosis and meiosis, DNA replication, DNA transcription and translation, know your cell structures; animal cell and plant cell, also know everything about photosynthesis. There are many other things taught in this class but those seem (to me) to be the main things that were time consuming to learn....Good Luck to ya! :)

Thank you for the advice

I agree with the previous posts, there isn't much you can do in advance. Biology is a very GENERAL course and every school will teach it in a different way. For example, my professor only gave us 10 specific things to know about photosynthesis, hardly in depth. Anyway, I'm actually a Biology major minoring in Chem and will be applying for an accelerated BSN program once I finish my Biology degree. I'm also a Biology tutor at my school so please don't be shy about private messaging me with questions when you start classes. I love tutoring Biology and I have some little tricks for learning things :)

Thanks Patricksk5 for the advice I know I will be Messaging you when I start the class.
