Following on from a thread we appear to have hijacked regarding nursing many moons ago and how we remember things done. Have started this thead :D

Right what I remember when training and qualifying in the 1980's

Hiding when consultant came onto the ward

Eating breakfast in the toilet

Enough people on the ward to ensure all care was given and time to talk to patients

Bed pan rounds (didn't do the pans piled on trolley tho)

Pressure rounds (set trolley at set times checking patients pressure areas)

O2 on pressure sores

trial on using maggots on wounds

Tidy clean wards

Right anyone else :lol_hitti

We have a small social life but to be truthful we dont have much money spare anymore and to have a busy social life you need more money plus a babysitter that is not going to cost an arm and a leg.

To be honest we have changed such a lot in the past 18 months, and my priority now is having a pool lol.

We live in a beautiful community but night life is minimum

You're right about the babysitting thing! The real reason I've re-discovered my social life is that my eldest is old enough - & sensible enough - to be left in charge from time to time!

Yup a pool is great - we love ours in Florida - has a jacuzzi attached & floating remote to turn it on/off or heat it/cool it! How SAD are we!!!! Hope to be having some of my social life set right up by that pool when we finally get over for good! Our area is also a little short on the night-life so we'll have to make our own!!:lol2:

Do you remember that "hospital" smell that literally seemed to soak into your skin? When I did my return to nursing in 2005 it just didn't smell like that anymore. I guess they were using powerful disinfectants then that are probably banned now!! Wonder if that's why the MRSA rates soared?!!

Yeah I remember the smell I loved it, it never smells like a hospital anymore.

Do you remember the bell you rang to get rid of the visitors and how you would ring it viciously the second time when they weren't leaving promptly.

All the opening of the pillows would face away from the in door.

I worked as a student in one place where you would have to hide when the Surgeon did his rounds

I loved it when we had set visiting times, gave us chance to catch up on other stuff, I know some hospitals are bringing it back

As a nurse in the States, I am intrigued by the idea of cardboard bedpans. Please tell me more.

And glass IV bottles, we still occasionally use them.

disposable bed pans made of cardboard and once used put in a machine and ripped to shreds and washed away, really good. Very rare have I used glass IV bottles

We call it the grunger!

after being in quite a few hospitals and seeing how they deal with the lack of the poo eater is intriguing. I cant believe that they have never followed thru with the brits and still expect their nurses to handle bodily waste this way. the american nurses cant grasp the idea of cardboard bedpans and urinals.
