Hi

Plan on nursing in the US and have decided to do it myself as opposed to using an agency. I have read all the postings and think I now how to go about it!! :uhoh21: But my question is - How and at what time do you sort out green card for husband and kids?

This site is great loads of good advice - thanks :)

I am presently going through the process and although I don't have kids I do have a husband and his greencard is being processed with me as the main holder, the hospital sponsering me is also paying for him. I would imagine the same would be for you, your husband and the kids.

Specializes in RN, BSN, CHDN.

Hi,

I believe you need to pass the NCLEX first but you will also need to get sponsered by a US employer before you can apply for green card.

You can be doing both at the same time ie start studying it is a hard exam probably take 4 months or more doing at least 2 hours a day, at the same time start contacting hospitals ect re sponsership and a job.

When did you train to be RN because some training does not meet all US requirements you need to have done general training ie med/sur, obs&gynae, mental health, paeds ect if you trained to be an RN adult you will need to make up hours in some speciaities.

Have you been to the web site for CGFNS to see requirements.

You need to get transcripts from your nursing school re your training cost about £20-£30 if you phone the school of nursing they will tell you how much they charge. I advise you to do that asap then you can see if you meet US requirements.

Go to http://www.learningext.com and sign up for their NCLEX course I did the 12 week one cost about £60 but as I was doing other studying didnt really need that long one, but I passed the NCLEX so I think it was worth it.

It can take up to 18 months so the sooner you start the better.

Please email me if I can help you in any way. As I said before I am with an agency so it is different for me but I have learnt a lot and anything I can do in the way of advice I am only too happy to share.

I am now waiting for visa screen and it can take from 30-360 days so here I am on day 1.

Take care Kay

Definitely submit for them at the same time as you do yours. I am a very big advocate of doing everthing at once. But again, you need to have a sponsor to petition for you, and they in turn would also submit for your family at the same time.

You can not apply for a green card on your own.

Figure about 4 months for the VSC. This is the average time for it, provided that your school submitted all of the proper documents in a timely fashion.

Thanks for that everybody.

Ok so I apply for a Visa screen and the CGFNS at the same time. After passing the CGFNS (positive thinking) I then apply to sit the NCLEX and search for a sponcer in the US. Then they apply for a green card for me and family?

Cheers

OOOps

forgot the contacting the BON to get an ATT after CGFNS and before NCLEX?

Kay :)

P.S

I do meet the criteria

For most states you don't need to sit the cgfns exams just do a CES report. A slightly quicker route is to apply via cgfns for NY BON, they have a special arrangement with cgfns for processing CES and getting your ATT with NY BON, once you get that you can sit NCLEX. At the same time apply for visa screen and once they recieve your pass nclex result they will process the visa screen. With applying for the NY through cgfns it is cgfns that applies for your transcripts. I would do another search through this forum as Suzanne has mentioned this route a few times and gives excellent advice on going through the process.

Forgoet about the CGFNS exam, unless you are going to be working in Michigan or Illinois. They are the only two that you cannot endorse to without US work experience, if you do not take the exam. It will not help you with anything or make things any quicker. Actually will delay you.

As Anna stated above, go the route of NY. It is the easiest. You have to pay the fee for the special crednetials evaluation for NY, but they do all of the gathering of the info for you. You just need to send the applications. All you need is the one for NY licnesure, the special Credentials Eval for NY and the Visa Screen Application , the last two are from CGFNS. Three applications and then you can just sit back...................

Hope that this helps............... :balloons:
