I'm a practical nursing student in BC and i graduate in aug 2008,and i wanna practice in Toronto but the problem is i dont know if they still hire LPN's with one year eductaion cause i know in Ontario its a 2 year program for Practical Nurses. And are there bridging Programs from LPN-RPN and can i get a job as an LPN while bridging?

And can i get Licensed In ON with a BC education

PLS HELP!!!!

Alberta is also a two year programme for PNs. BC seems to be in it's own lala land world when it comes to training PNs. They also seem to have a lot more "career college" type training schools than other places. Most PNs in Alberta go through Community Colleges and what were Vocational/Trade schools similar to Vancouver Vocational Inst.

You need to contact the nursing college in Ontario to answer your questions. I do remember a classmate that moved to Ontario and did her final practicum there.

The licensing exam is a national exam, so if you've already passed it you shouldn't have a problem. Your education might be deemed lacking and you may have to upgrade a few courses. I know that Pns moving to Alberta from BC a few years ago had to upgrade their Anatomy, it wasn't as in depth as ours and skipped a few things like Eye Exams and the like.

Thanks Fiona!

The RPN program in Ontario is 2.5 years.. when including your period of consolidation. They will hire LPN's under the title of a PSW, CCA or Nurses Aide, which is an unregulated/ unlicensed position... but you will not be able to practice as a nurse in Ontario until you meet the critieria which could be a least another year of full time school. Good Luck:)

Disagree. If you hold a valid license and passed CPNRE you are a licensed nurse across Canada. Your education is checked by each province you apply to be licensed in. It is only in individual hours that you have to make up hours of education.

What you are basically saying is you believe that every PN educated before the two year diploma came into being would have to go back to school and upgrade. This is completely an incorrect assumption.

I'm moving this thread to the Canadian Nurses Forum with the hope that it will accrue some helpful responses. Good luck to you!

Call the College of Nurses of Ontario, and ask them about getting your RPN licence. They have a very VERY helpful 1-800 number, and they are the only ones who can tell you for sure what your situation is.

I'm not totally familiar with the Toronto RPN situation, but as far as I know, nursing homes still hire RPNs.......acute care hospitals I think hire mostly RNs now.

Yes, there are RPN-BScN bridging courses, but I'm not sure how competitive they are. Look through some of the Toronto College/University websites. I don't have time to have a look myself, but the some name for you to google: Humber College, George Brown College, Seneca College, Centennial College, York University, Ryerson University, University of Toronto.

I was a practical nursing student in Ontario for a year but due to some family reasons I have to move to BC. Before I decided to move, I phone the CNA and CNO and I asked them if I decided to finished my practical nursing program in BC, do I have to take different exam assuming I already passed the national exam in BC?? They told me No. Once I become an LPN in BC, I just have to have my license change from LPN to RPN in Ontario. However, they told me that once I graduate the LPN program in BC, I should make sure that I take the national registration exam in BC because if I will take it in Ontario the CNO might asked me to go back to school. So, I do as I was told, I took my exam in BC but since I found a job here in BC, I stayed.

About the 2 year program in Ontario and 1 year program in BC, it is two years in Ontario because the program run for only 2 semester every year and in Ontario they don't have summer and spring classes. While in BC, it is a concise program the run the whole year so if you think about it, it is just the same.

I'm not an PN, but by the looks of it I think BC's LPN program is still 1-2 semesters shorter than those in ON and AB.

I think it's more course content. When I did my training in AB, we did our four semesters back to back in roughly 59 weeks. Barely a week to 10 days between semesters.

BC had a less intense A&P back then and currently, I don't think they include the university transfer courses.

My RPN course was 5 semesters.
