NCLEX-RN OR CGFNS Exam

  1. I am foreign-born and foreign-educated nurse who wants to be a licensed RN in New York State. I have been certified already by CGFNS. I have written and failed the NCLEX-RN three times but I am bound and determined to write it (or an equivalent) AGAIN). I shall never surrender!

Which exam is better to take to become a licensed nurse in New York State? Can I take CGFNS Exam instead of NCLEX-RN or is NCLEX-RN an absolute requirement to be an RN in NY? If so, what are the benefits for taking the CGFNS Exam? I've heard the CGFNS exam is a diagnostic exam or a predicter exam for writing NCLEX-RN. If so, I couldn't understand why anyone would spend time (and money) taking the CGFNS exam if it itself had no value. Why not do your own diagnostic NCLEX-RN? I am currently living in the Middle East doing some other work so I wish to minimize the costs of flying to write exams.

The NCLEX is the only licensure examination for nurses in the US for both US and non-US educated nurses. The CGFNS exam is not a licensure exam. NY needs the Credential Verification Service (CVS) for NY also done by CGFNS and NO the CGFNS Certificate does not and is not accepted to replace it. You need the CVS for NY to be made eligible to take the exam and it does not matter of you were already made eligible from another State already. Even foreign RNs who already passed the NCLEX or got licensed on another state STILL needs to undergo the CVS process for NY no matter what. The NCLEX exam is likewise the same whatever state that made you eligible for it and whereever in the world you took it.

Best thing to do is just re-apply again to the original state that made you eligible for it.

I highly recommend reading Suzanne's Primer because everything a foreign RN should know and then some are in there.

What is Suzanne's primer? If it is a series of messages in this forum, where are they?

If you have already been certified by CGFNS, then you must have taken and passed the CGFNS exam previously. Why are you still asking about whether to take NCLEX or CGFNS? It doesn't make sense to me. Or by "CGFNS certified," did you mean the CGFNS credential evaluation?

At the top of the "international forum" there is a post called "Primer for nurses wanting to work in the US" or something similar.

If you want to work in New York, don't take CGFNS. Do the CGFNS requirements for New York State (CVS credentials evaluation) and apply for licensure.

To work in the US as a nurse you have to pass NCLEX there is no way round it I wouldn't recommended CGFNS exam unless requirement of the state you aquire your license

i am a foreign trained nurse and i am working as an rn here in us.i took cgfns when i was in my home country and took nclex and ielts when i went here.it is only california board of nursing and new york board of nursing who do not need cgfns.all other states need it as far as i know.so all you need to do is accomplish everything that new york board of nursing requires so as for you to take the nclex.every state definitely need nclex.goodluck!

That is totally wrong. There are only about 5 states that require CGFNS exam, almost all do not.

It has changed considerably over the past three years.

That people still insist on taking the CGFNS exam is beyond me. What a waste of time, money and effort.

There are actually a handful of states that still require that exam, such as Michigan. And you cannot endorse without it either to there.

But there are still some wonderful agencies in the Philippines that tell the nurse that it is required.
