Congratulations! Moved to the International Forum, since you're asking a question that may not be answered on the NCLEX forum. Good luck to you in all you do.

Congratulations! You cannot get a SSN until you have your visa and arrive in the US to start work.

You can only get your SSN if you have a green card.

You will not get the SSN#, until you can provide a document that states that you can legally work here. A green card is not physically required, but proof that you can work is. As long as you have a visa that is good for work.

It must be applied for in person, and that is after you have completed the entire immigration process, it is the final step.

When I applied for my SSN, I only showed my Philippine passport and the immigrant visa attached to it. I told them I don't have my green card yet because I just arrived then. When I applied for my SSN, it was my 2nd day in the US.

    Congratz!

You can also get SSN if you have EAD (Employment Authorization Document), which you can get 15 days after you applied for adjustment of status (AOS) at the same time applying for EAD.

AOS can be applied while in the US and visa is available.
