i just received this message....... and maybe you might be interested ..

original message from a friend...

in a desperate housewives scene in which susan (teri hatcher) was told by her gynecologist that she might be hitting menopause, she replied, "can i just check those diplomas because i just want to make sure that they are not from some med school in the philippines."

hmmm... not that kind of stuff i want to hear, considering my family (and most filipinos in the us) is in the healthcare business.

there's a demand for abc and desperate housewives producers' apology started by a community of filipino americans. the last time i checked, there were around 4700 signatures. click this link if you want to join http://www.petitiononline.com/filabc/

be heard and spread the word!

We Filipinos are sensitive to this issue, because our culture is different from other cultures like the Americans..So they must respect our culture....as Nurses we are trained to respect and understand different cultures.... Thats why we are trained to be transcultural nurses...

yes even if teri hatcher just deliver watever the scrip prepared by the writers but if shes sensitve enough then she shuld say something, like will i not hurt wth this script. lets accept that people around the world have different personal reactios, i gues we nurses would understand it, thats why we have transcultural nursing and for all things why choose philippines thats a big shame on them filipinos are hard working in the states and they insulted that way shes also insulting the healthcare system cmpetncy of the states . how dare to say that, before a filipino doctor can pracice they undergo series of exam . so she better say i better check the amercian exam for doctor if it was given correctly.

Sorry, but the characters just get the script before they shoot, they do not even have time to think about things. And this same thing happens in your country with your soap operas as well.

I am sure that things have been said about somebody that offended someone else without anyone even realizing it. We have all heard all different types of things, and if you are going to get offended by something like this, you are going to have issues working as nurses in other countries, not even thinking of the US.

But you will come into contact with patients that are older and you come from SE Asia and they fought in Viet Nam and they will not want you to care for them because of their confusion and they think that you are from there. You are not going to walk out from caring for that patient unless other arrangements can be made, because that will be abandoning a patient and you can lose a license over it.

All of us know that any physician that is in the US must go thru an internship, as well as a residency program. We see things in the show ER all of the time here that we know are impossible for it to be done, but do we complain each time? Just is not worth it. These are only soap operas, not national news. But you have given the show what they have wanted, an increase in their ratings, not the other way.

Quite a few that are posting on this forum are planning to work in CA, and if I remember correctly, you also posted about doing the same thing.

Suggest that you develop a thicker skin before you start working, or you are going to have issues with many things that are done and said. I have worked with nurses from the Philippines since I have started my career, so very familiar with the culture. And I make an excellent pancit as well.

Each culture is different and has its own plus side and negative side. This very same topic has been discussed in many of the free newspapers that are available all over the Bay Area as well as the LA area. And they were written by Filipinos in the first place. This is where you should complain to, it was started by Filipinos to begin with, not by any American. They only went with a story line that was in all of the papers over here, nothing more.

Le't not keep the fire burning, shall we? ABC already apologize, and even if the damaged has been done, it already happened! I know there's a root why the script writer or whoever wrote that script. Both parties have their own issues, we know that!

I was hurt too, but we can't talk about this issue forever! It's time to move on! I think people involved already learned their lesson and so did the Filipino people. It's a matter of learning and unlearning! And you know what I love with this kind of issue or when people talked bad things about me? I LOVE PROVING THEM WRONG!

God bless to all!

i guess it's true that actors really just cares about the $$$ they will be earning. reading the script just before filming? they're so irreponsible with the things they say. so unfortunate for them :wink2:

we know that each culture is different, the least we can do is to respect each other and not make fun of them.

We could go on with this issue ad nauseam.

There is seemingly a disconnect between what this is (just a one-liner joke on a fictional show) and what it means to the people concerned.

I believe most people do not think Teri Hatcher really said it spontaneously. We know it came from a script and we know actors follow a script.

Yes, there are other things to focus on. And a lot needs to be worked out. But we know from experience that words, yes, words, even just one, can and have broken relationships, heck even started wars.

A remark does not have to be made by governments or institutions to have a requisite response. In 2006, a Denmark newspaper published a cartoon caricature disrespecting the founder of Islam, Muslims around the world were outraged. You cannot just say to the Muslims that it was just a joke, or that it did not reflect the Danish governments views (IT DID NOT), or even that there are more pressing issues that Muslims around the world need to face on (like the Palestinian issue, repressive Arab governments or the Taliban among others).

Yes, there are many problems besetting the Philippines, and yes, there have been bad things written by Filipino newspapers in CA (which are in most cases true). But that does not give scriptwriters poetic license to grossly generalize a racial group. In the same way that no person has the right to tell a mother, husband, child, or family member who had a loved one die in Iraq that their loved ones died in vain, in a war founded on falsehood or that they deserved it anyway for destroying a country and its future (either in Philippine shows, in Oprah or in CNN). Even if you actually believed it.

I think Filipinos are flexible. If we can work as domestic helpers, teachers, mechanics, foremen in repressive countries in the Middle East we can survive CA. We don't need to thicken our skin. But what we won't tolerate is insult to our heritage. No matter if its just ONE LINE.

I think enough has been said already about the issue and everyone's side or views has been well represented as well.

Closing the thread for a cooling-off period.

Thank you for understanding.
