Canadian RN looking to move to the US

Hi everyone,

I am a new nursing graduate from Ontario, Canada considering moving to the US because of the lack of opportunities in Ontario right now. I've heard that some states such as South Carolina and California are recruiting Canadian nurses. I've looked at a few agencies and most of them seem to want at least a year of work experience with a nursing specialty. Can anyone recommend a reputable agency/ recruiter/ hospital that will help a new graduate find employment in America?

The US is swamped with new grads of its own, many of whom are having difficulty finding jobs, also. There's not a lot of demand for importing new grads. Sorry I can't be more encouraging than that, but that's the situation. Best wishes!

Definitely not California, read the state threads.

I found the same thing, they all require 1 yr+ so get that out of the way. There is demand you just have to be proactive.

Well that's pretty unfortunate (for me as well as the American nurses having difficulties), guess I'll stay on the grind up here :/

I don't know where you got the information from but new and inexperienced nurses have up to 54% unemployment rate in California

North Oaks & Ochsner in Louisiana (around the New Orleans area) do have new graduate programs. Ochsner's an enormous health system that hires many foreign nurses. I didn't like working at Ochsner, but it's a foot in the door. The other nurses are mostly awesome team players... cliques are discouraged. The benefits are decent. Pay is about $23/hr day shift. They pay overtime & differentials with no complaints. Compared to the rest of the country, it's pretty cheap to live even in the city. Crime is high. People are friendly, & you learn pretty quickly which areas/people to avoid. Pot holes are bad. Food is the best in the country. I grew up here. Love it with all my heart, & hate it at the same time. Just avoid the 9th floor, Post-Op... avoid it at all costs. Good luck!
