I am currently looking at appropriate staffing levels in Older People's Mental Health Wards. I'm sure you will all agree that we never have enough with the relevant skills. In my areas we would usually have an establishment of approx 20 staff for 20 beds which gives us a shift breakdown of 4 for am, 3 for pm and 2 for nights. These may vary dependent on circumstances ( and the availability of Agency staff). We only ever seem to have 1 RMN on duty at a given time. In todays pressurised and paper driven wards, what is considered the baseline in your areas. Thanks for your comments.
