Info about Registered Nursing in Canada

Published

Hello,

I am a Registered Nurse in the US and have a License accredited by the nursing board of Virginia. I was wondering if anyone had any information on whether I can practice in Canada with this license or would I be required to give the NCLEX again for the Canadian board of nursing. I visited the Canadian and US board of nursing websites and have been unable to find any answers.

Would appreciate any info on this.

Thank you

The NCLEX is an American test and is not accepted in Canada. you would have to contact the college of nurses(our licensing bodies are called colleges) in the province in which you would wish to work. They would evaluate your education and experience and decide if you are eligible to write the CRNE, which is the Canadian nursing exam. The minimum education accepted to be licensed as an RN in Canada is BSN.

As the above poster stated, NCLEX is a USA exam and one is required to take the CRNE for Canada! I am Cdn but had my schooling in the USA--but my two younger, better looking, smarter sisters are Cdn RN's. I do believe there are some provinces that will accept ADN RN but one has to have a certain amount of experience.

You must pass the CRNE in order to practice anywhere in Canada. See the provincial nursing board website in the province which you want to practice to learn about how to apply.

I am also an RN from Virginia. I currently live in Toronto, ON. You have to have a BSN to practice here and you also have to pass the CRNE. It is an extremely long and expensive process to become registered. The whole process took me a year to complete and the boards are only offered every 3-4 months. I suggest you contact the CNO and get started on the paperwork while you are still working in the States.

Thank you all for your msgs I have gained much info now and appreciate your help !
