Indecisive Which Province/ Country to Work

World Canada

Published

Hi everyone,

I am a recent graduate and passed my NCLEX this Feb. I feel like I wanted to explore more working job opportunities outside Ontario/ Canada.

I got a job offer in rural Prince Edward Island this March but I declined it because of my plan to go to the US. Yes, you can definitely shout at me.

I currently live in Ontario & have my CNO RPN & RN registration. I also got my Nova Scotia RN registration & licensed with Michigan this August. Yes, I have been busy. I have browsed on Nova Scotia and is interviewed for job opportunity. But it seems that health care in Nova Scotia is behind Ontario in terms of technological progress i.e. electronic patient record, MAR, documentation etc.

But my plan is really to go to Maine. Yes, still close to the Canadian maritime side. I already got a US job offer this March 2019 and having issues with Maine State BON. I am just awaiting now for the big decision after eventually all the BON's requests have been submitted.

I got my CGFNS Visa Screen this July and I am ready for a new adventure.

Regardless, my mind is set to leave Ontario before the end of the year.

Did you have a question?

My mind is blown on spending the money to register in NS without having a job offer. $600 now? I'm in NS now, and have worked in Maine as well.

Now that you mentioned it. Yes.

Nova Scotia’s registration is more expensive than Ontario. But I think the cost of living is less expensive than Toronto. The starting rate for new RN is a little bit higher than Ontario. Nova Scotia has a lot of beautiful landscapes and close to the sea. My option for work is a medical-surgical unit in Halifax. It is also close to the schools for potential continuing education. If I am going there, I am debating whether to choose a rural one qualified for OSAP forgiveness. But the other towns seems to be smaller, I might get bored & lonelier.

Did you have issues getting your Maine license? Maine is relatively a smaller & older US State. I am just wondering if they are more accepting of nonWhite male nurses?

Is it worth it to work in the US & pay both US & Canadian taxes?

Update: I chose the US instead. Just got my US RN licensuure this Nov. 2019.

You may need to apply again through NNAS or if you did, then re-apply for RN assessment for College of Nurses of Alberta. It’s better to ask the College since it’s NCLEX now, you may need to be assessed &  take this as well.

If you have RN registration anywhere in Canada like in Ontario, you can just endorse it to other provinces. You can definitely endorse your RPN but the scope in other provinces are different, I think.

Do you have your Canadian citizenship?

You can apply as RN in the US. It’s a long process since you will need your education in India/ registration in Canada be assessed if compatible with the US RN education. Each State has different preferred assessment, but in my experience, I used CGFNS to get my Visa Screen.

Thank u so much for your reply!!I appreciate it.

Actually my RN was recognized here in Ontario and I just  have to take CRNE with no further education or courses. Those days its was with short answers and fill in the blanks .Unfortunerly lost in just 3 Mark's.not like NCLEX we can take more than 3 times.

So as u said I will apply through NNAS for Alberta ,then I think I will get chance to write NCLEX.I asked my college CNO as well if they will give a chance for NCLEX in Ontario if not I will do where process of registration in Alberta. Then I can transfer I guess to Ontario???

I am citizen here in Canada.

If Ontario assessed your paperwork already, why not just open the application again instead of doing the whole NNAS with College of Nurses of Alberta? Are you gonna be back to zero with your application? I feel that having an Ontario registration then endorse it to Alberta is a better option. Just because Ontario tends to be harder I think, if you wanna come back. But up to you whatever your circumstances are.

Ya that’s right .... I am waiting for Ontario CNO to reply for me what they will do for me in terms of giving me a chance to write NCLEX.
If they said No or something then I will apply Alberta. I know it’s a process again but this is my only way to become RN or else I have to study RN in Ontario as as bridging program which also takes time and $!!

Good day!
