yes, everything is new to me, but i am absolutely loving my job.
i just have one more night with the preceptor (which is grrrrrrreat!). at first i was upset that she just didn't do anything and just made me do all the work, eventhough i was always late with my charting, and she called the doctor's when i was supposed to do that,....
i feel now that i am one shift away of being on my own, that i feel good and confident that i can do everything! my preceptors name was on the board next to the patients' name, so i erased her name and put my name there! (hey, i do everything for the patients anyways!)
so i guess that approach of learning was good for me, i can't wait so i can be own my own doing my own things, learning time management.... that really no one can teach you that.... eventhough my preceptor said that she was going to work on time management with me; and that was not done.
i love the computer charting system. charting is made very easy there. and i love the fact that we have lpn's, iv nurses, phlebotomists, cna's........ it's a very resourceful hospital. we don't get sign on bonuses, but it's ok because the hospital is that good that people really love it there, and stay there. it is very hard getting a position there. i was very lucky that i worked there as a tech before becoming a nurse. i have two friends who never worked as techs there, with their licences in their hands, applied and didn't get the job there.
but regardless, i love love love my job. i have co-workers that are helpful to me, no one treats me bad or looks down on me. except one time that i got yelled at for no reason by the laboratory tech.... she had such an attitude over nothing. i was picking up a 24hr urine bottle, and she wanted a paper with the patient's name on it. so so so uncalled for... but anyways.
did i mention that i love my job.
working in this hospital is so awesome. i was offered $4000 sign on bonus to work at nights in an adult hospital. i had accepted because hey who gives you that money everyday, to get a job straight out of school, i have to start working anyways!, i ended up getting the money, but soon after i gave it back, because i realized that i already worked at a great hospital (as a tech) and that i did not need to change to adults for any reason.
but pediatrics is my calling. i love love love pediatrics.

I'm so happy for you! You also give me a hope b/c I start my first job in a few weeks and have been reading all the horror stories of ppl going thru their preceptorship and hating it, which was making me all the more nervous to start. I'm glad to hear someone say they love their job and had a positive experience!

PattyRn----I also love my job, just graduated in December 07 and passed my boards 3rd week of Jan. I also start on my own next week, and basically have been working independently the last few weeks, my preceptor now has her own 2 patients then is there for me if I need help with my 2. I have asked her advice on somethings but basically am on my own.
it is so nice to read your positive post as I feel like I am walking on cloud 9. I hope I never lose this "I love my job, I love being a nurse feeling"
We have a small group of nurses at my hospital who gripe and complain, and I try to stay away from them as much as possible. I dont want anyone to bring me down.
How long do you think we will continue to feel this way? I hope it last a long long time. I really feel privileged to be a nurse.

Hi and congrats on finishing up your preceptorship. I'm really happy for you and am encouraged with your positive posting.
I am just into my third month and am expierencing the honeymoon is over phase. I was so excited to get my job pass my boards and actually get a paycheck, but now the reality is there and I am struggling with my assignments, getting crabby to my preceptor and questioning my choice. However, reading posts likes yours and others on this forum makes me feel like what I'm, going through is normal and to keep on keeping on!! So thanks for giving us inspiration and hope. I hope that doesn't sound to corney but this breaking in period for us new nurses is a real challenge!!

thanks for the inspiring post! its always nice to hear from someone who loves their job in nursing. i started my position in feb. i worked as an aide/extern in the PACU before starting as a nurse. i am not hardly as excited as you are, becasue i know all the negatives about my unit and hospital. but, i am grateful and happy with where i am. my coworkers are so knowledgeable, helpful, and very supportive. i work in a level 1 trauma hosp and we are always very busy. people come fro all over the world for treatment at my hospital, so its a very very demanding job.
i hope you continue to love what you do and spread your positive energy to others!

Congrats! I've been on my own for about a month now and it's great. I love my unit! The only downfall I have is the techs that work on the midnight shift with me. But I'm going back to days the last week of March! Back with my day crew that I love love love so much... haha. It's great to hear stories about other new nurses that are happy with what they're doing too. Good luck!

Sounds like by making you do it all even when you were behind on charting the preceptor WAS working with you on time management skills.
Congrats..I'm glad you love your job. I found a great one right out of school as well...it's nice when you enjoy going to work.
