In AFC Band 7 manager manages another band 7

Published

Me and my manager both are banded 7. She is a ward manager and also my line manager. I am a CNS work in all areas. This week we had a ding dong regarding my holidays. I wanted to take time of when routine work was reduced and around my work workload but she wanted me take when she wanted it. She also not willing to give me whole week. She said i can have only 3 days out of 5. Have you heard anything like it?

I would suggest check with union, within reason you should be able to take holidays when you want not when she wants

Thanks:

I have spoken my lead nurse, who said that she will to speak to her. I bet when i go to work 2moro she will bite my head off. Though I am having non of that.

Speaking as a steward of a major union, I would suggest you keep records of your discussions from now on. If this person is your line manager, then they can refuse or agree your leave time - reasonable managers would allow where possible, but if they argue 'service needs' it is hard to disagree with this.

This person may give you a 'hard time' but they could also be accused of bullying and harrasment also, so you need to try to take a step back and ask yourself whether you or thwey are behaving 'reasonably' in each situation. If you think this person is not behaving 'reasonably' then speak to your union steward BEFORE taking any further action.

Good luck to you!

Thanks:

My line manager told me that she was going to discuss this with lead nurse. By then lead has already got a e-mail from me explaining why there was a need for me to take time around when i wanted. Lead nurse knew that that by not giving me holiday around when i requested meant i had to "shuffle", move, even cancel my clinic.

My line manager went to lead nurse to discuss, and after that she just signed my holiday card, though she was not happy the fact i went to lead nurse. I think she just wanted to give me "hard time".

glad it was sorted but not your fault she couldn't sort it out without going to lead nurse

I am glad it was sorted out but was is it necessary for this agro? I stand up for myself in the best interest of the patients and organisation. Thanks to my lead nurse who understands.

However other staff also have problems with their holidays with that line manager but they are frightened to say anything.

Some of these staffs have small children and they would like to attend things like school activites but its very to arrange anything sensible with this manager. But it is ok for this line manager to attend her children's acitivites, takes school holidyays as she like or comes to work 10 am start and so on.

I know we need to be reasonable when requesting time off but believe me things i see with this line manager, i would not stand for it.
