Impressions of MCC's orientation today?

Lol, that's EXACTLY what I said when I got into my car afterwards. "Well that was about 4 hours of nothing new." lol

Anywhoo, where are you going to get all your medical thingamajig done at? I was thinking that Concentra place b/c I heard it was $80 from someone in the audience.

Oh and btw, I was the guy w/ the longsleeve shirt/glasses in the front if you saw me by chance.

Just had this thought:

It's funny that they didn't mention where to buy our uniforms, or whatever else we need, but I can imagine like myself, many people already have the website for the scrubs/etc that the school wants and are already touring them

And PDA's, LOL, everyone freaked out when they mentioned they 'might' be a requirement. I already had one, pretty nice too btw. Palm TX, w/ Nurse Constellation and Taber's (granted, it was about $550 total, b/c I HAD to get the warranty considering i've heard Palm's are hit or miss for lasting throught the course). It's all about reading here, I think this site has helped me prepare more than their orientation could have

I guess I am going to my family doctor to get the physical, drug screen and titers done? I don't know if my insurance covers it or not, but I need to go for something else so I will try to get it all done in one visit. I have gone to Concentra before for a work physical, years ago (the one at 18 and Van Dyke). I already knew we needed Dove uniforms and how much they were going to cost. I have a friend in the program already and she said she would sell me hers (I think we are the same size). It was amazing how some people seemed to have no knowledge of the commitment they were about to make, both timewise and $$$. I don't know what to think about the PDAs. I would assume I could get one cheaper than $200 if we end up needing them? It seems like a good investment to make for the program, whether it ends up being required or not.

I was actually counting the men, I was impressed with how many are in :).

They should have mentioned this site really, I mean, it's mostly because of here that I had an idea of what I was getting myself into.

You can get a cheaper PDA for sure, like the one that grad had, only diff is a bigger screen and mine has like wi-fi and bluetooth which you may not care to have, I just like checking my email on it Heck I could even write this post on it.

I knew the money and time commitment, a couple hundred bucks is a lot but thinking of the end result is what's most important. No biggie to me, and i'm unemployed lol (woot GI Bill).

Btw, i've been using Taber's religiously for a bit now, and the programs on the thing I mentioned earlier are great, a TON of drug calcs, and drug references, and it's very user friendly.

Definitely worth it, but only if you can afford it, everyone has a diff. situation in life.

I agree, the orientation was a waste of time...we could have been sent the entire packet of info and just read it ourselves. I did kind of like the questions we were able to bounce of the current/former nursing students though.

Let me make sure I understand: When our letters are sent out regarding our start dates (supposedly by June 15th), they are also going to include the information for Dove, right? I spoke to the Financial Aid office yesterday, and she said the Nursing Dept was also supposed to have given us info on the MI Nursing scholarship. When I told her they hadn't, she said the Fin. Aid office knew and wasn't pleased...I think maybe they are sending it with our start date info.

Yes, they are sending the information about the scholarship out with the start dates. It's due by the end of June, so you have time to get it filled out. You can't fill it out without knowing what group you are placed in, that's why they didn't give us the forms last week. The information about DOVE is pretty basic. You need to buy the uniscrub top and the unisex pants, in sailor blue. Not sure what lab coat we need. I am wondering if they had any speakers at your meeting from hospitals.....they did in 2006.

Yes, you will need a PDA but not until 1600's and it is the best investment you will ever make!

No representatives from hospitals were there to speak to us, but I had heard from someone else that they were at last years orientation. I was told reps from St. John's were there last year offering anyone with an acceptance letter jobs making $12-$15/hr...I was looking forward to talking to someone about that!

I have an old Palm Zire71...I'm not sure if I should get a new one or not before starting clinicals. What specific PDA nursing software programs are a "must have" for MCC?
