im having trouble gathering my thoughts

Published

Hey everyone,

I am in Fundamentals of Nursing and have my 3rd exam coming up in 2 weeks. I passed the first exam and failed the second one. On this upcoming test it will be on oxygenation, sleep, electrolytes, pain and a few other things. But I am having difficulty on gathering my thoughts. I have recorded the lectures to go back in my powerpoints on any notes that I missed. I am also reading the book by Taylor for fundamentals. I also have a saunders nclex comprehensive review to help me with questions. I basically feel like everything I need to know and all my notes are scattered from all 3 of the different sources I use. I'm not sure if I should focus on topics that the professor talks about in class or just stick to the assigned reading in the book on things she really didn't touch up on. Any advice or tips on what info to focus on? I need to pass this next test or else I may not be able to bring my grades up.

I also noticed on my exam that I always narrow the answers down to two but always end up picking the wrong one, which really sucks and is hurting my grade! HELP!

Well the way most nursing exams work is all 4 answers can generally apply (in certain situation for each), with 2 being accurate and usually one being more correct than the other. (that is the tests I get here, may not apply to your school or other schools). If your school uses ATI tests and materials, the ATI mimics the taylor book, but just gives you the basic facts and important stuff. My suggestion of what works for me is to read the book chapters, then read the teachers slides or presentation. Then you go from a global image of the topic to a narrow more in depth image of it.

One trick that helps me taking a nursing exam (that a professor taught my class) was to never change your answer! Because more times than not your changing the right answer. What helped me on fundamentals was reading the Taylor, but focusing in on what the teacher taught about. Especially if they give a study guide for the exam.

Sometimes it helps to underline key words in the question so you know exactly what you're looking for. Sometimes the answer will directly relate to those key words.

During nursing school i would mostly focus on the things the teacher addresses in the materials for the class. it is too much when you are trying to focus on every detail in the readings. I suggest getting a Kaplan Book that teaches the "decision tree" method for NCLEX style questions. I wish I had learned about the decision tree sooner rather than in my last semester of school like I did. It helps you walk through each question to determine what the question is really asking. Using that method is what helped me pass the NCLEX. Good luck!

My advice is to talk to your instructor. They're there to help. I had trouble in patho because my teacher had a heavy accent. I purchased Saunder and it was a fantastic help. You'll use it for when you study for the NCLEX so it isn't a waste of money
