I'm thinking of dropping out

There are times as a student when I felt that way too. Just listen to your heart and if nursing is your calling, you will find a way to make it through. Do something to relax and apmper yourself a bit. Read a book-non-medical, take a bubble bath, go for a walk and admire nature. Sometimes it can help to let some stress out. You may realize that all your hard work will pay off in the end. Good things come to those who stick it out. Good luck to you. ;-) Take care. I am sure you will make the right decision for YOU!

I think every nursing student has felt like dropping out at some point in time.... I have myself... But I refuse to let a few people who chose to make things more difficult and stressful than they have to be keep me from doing what I want to do.

And to be honest. I think the "roughness" of nursing school helps prepare you for working in the real world of medicine. I agree they do make things a lil more stressful than we want, but when you get out you will possibly have doctors yelling at you, etc.... I don't think its right, but that is the way MANY places are.

Its definately a personal decision, but before you throw away everything that you have worked for, think about things real hard... Cause I would hate for you to regret these a few years down the road...

I dropped out of nursing school, the first time around............I was just a kid and my priority was partying instead of college and nursing studies........

And then I returned at age 27 and loved every minute of school, even the minutes that I HATED SCHOOL!!!!!!!!!

After the amount of time, that you speak of do not drop out quickly, which doesn't sound like you are doing.......just do what you must do for yourself........

Nursing somedays is like this also, like what am I doing here, then it becomes rewarding again or you make a change in your work arena or increase your education base and it changes your focus.........

Keeping it all in balance is the key and the hard to do thing........

Definitely wait to make the decision. You're almost halfway there. Last year in my second semester of junior year, I almost quit. I had the letter to the Dean in my hand-twice. I was miserable, stressed, and ready to hang it all up. But I stuck with it, and this semester is much, much better.

Yes, it's stressful. No nursing school is not easy. It shouldn't be when you are so responsible for another person's well-being.

If you really do want to be a nurse, you'll have to dig deep to find the motivation to finish it.

I want to drop out every day, too. It's a common theme. This program is nothing like anything we've been trained for. It's intensive. It's bookish. It's hands-on........It's life and death. Listen to the others and wait until at least the end of the semester to think it through. Finish this one. You're here. You've worked SO hard to get here. I've made it through a bad marriage, divorce, children dying and living ones stressing out all while in school. I think I'm at my hardest point now too, but I won't let it beat me.

Think to the future. That is how we all get by.

Barb, I'm glad that you decided to stay in your program at least for now.

Sometimes the "crap" is overwelming and we just have to re-focus on our "goal".

Don't want to sound over reudundant here, but just wanted to add my good luck wishes to you. I, too, have often felt like dropping out, but I always make myself think about 2 1-2 years from now when I will have reach my ultimate goal and be an RN!!! One suggestion I would make would be to look into the possibility of transfering schools. During my first semester at college (4 year BSN program) I absolutley hated it...the campus, the teachers...everything excet the classes! This was the time during which I thought about dropping out everyday. I transfered schools the next semester...am currently in my second semester at my new school and it is a lot easier to stick it out here, even though I still am not always convinced that college is the thing for me! Hope you find your solution! Best of luck to you always in the future!

Barb, I was once in your shoes. My very first semester of nursing school. I had all the paper work filled out. I was walking to the advisors office with the work in my hand. I still had mixed feelings but felt I should go ahead and drop. My advisor told me that she don't want to see me give up, she said she knows I have what it takes, if I just become a little more organized and give it my all. She told me to stick it out till the end of the semester. I did and I am so glad I did. If I had dropped out when I was going to I would have DEFINITELY regretted dropping out. Every semester after that I got better and better and started developing more and more confidence. I would NOT say it got any easier because it did NOT get any easier but things did get better. I am a senior now and will graduate in May 2003. The light at the end of the tunnel is starting to shine a lit bit. It is still dim but I am at the point where I can see it more and more.

Only you can decide what is truly best for you. Listen to what you feel is best for you. Try to stick it out to the end of the semester if you can. If not let it be a choice because you don't like it not because you are scared or feel it is too much.

Nursing school is VERY stressful. Have you tried stress management classes or reading stress management books. If not I highly recommend them. They are VERY helpful to a student. My school started requiring them.
