I've contacted IDPH and ISBE with no response so far...been googling with no luck. Does anyone here know if a trained staff member can give rectal diazepam for seizures in schools in Illinois? I've heard only school nurses can give it, but I can't find any proof of that anywhere. I don't think my school will be willing to pay for a sub for field trips unless we have proof that it's legally necessary.

I feel like there has been a lot of change at ISBE and responses aren't as quick as they have been in the past.
I do know they changed the verbiage in the IL NPA regarding delegation last year. I believe it states that the RN can delegate oral and possibly subQ medications, but not rectal. Try googling the NPA and or check out the ISBE website and see what you can find.

c) A registered professional nurse shall not delegate any nursing activity requiring the specialized knowledge, judgment, and skill of a licensed nurse to an unlicensed person, including medication administration. A registered professional nurse may delegate nursing activities to other registered professional nurses or licensed practical nurses.
d) A registered professional nurse may delegate medication administration to a licensed medication aide in a qualified facility as authorized by Section 80-20 of the Act.
e) A registered nurse may delegate tasks to other licensed and unlicensed persons. A licensed practical nurse who has been delegated a nursing activity shall not re-delegate the nursing activity. A registered professional nurse or advanced practice nurse retains the right to refuse to delegate or to stop or rescind a previously authorized delegation. (Section 50-75 of the Act).
Thank you!

In Virginia we are allowed to instruct a teacher how to administer Diastat, but the teacher has the right to refuse. I ususally shall we say encourage that. Most parents are ok with the teacher just calling 911, once in a blue moon you have one that freaks out and is insistant that someone go that be able to administer the drug. Our health office is then required to find a sub nurse to go on the field trip.

I am researching this very thing for Maryland.
@ihavealltheice I sent this over to administration. I told them we need nurse coverage for field trips for this student. Surprisingly no push back. School nurse win! I think the parents will be pleased too.

Here we send Diazepam on field trips but the teacher is supposed to call 911 for seizure over 5 mins then give the diazepam to the EMT to administer.

That makes sense! I'm not telling my administration though. Looking forward to my zoo and jump zone field trips to come ?
