Id like to nurse in the USA

Published

Hi everyone =)

So iv been a registered nurse for three years now, i live in the UK and promised myself that once i had some experience on board, i would apply to work in the US. I do have family out there, but they are not blood family as my step dad is American.

I have no idea where to start for my application, do i need to go through a company? Do i email a hospital and ask them? Do i apply for a temporary visa first?

I understand id have to sit a NCLEX exam as well, as nursing is slightly different in the US to the UK.

Any help would be massively appreciated because this is something i really do have my heart set on and have since i was young.

Thanks

Natalie

Your biggest hurdle is how will you get a visa to work in USA. Either work or family related visa, I think work visa takes many years and family related visa can be a few months or up to 12 + years.

Specializes in PDN; Burn; Phone triage.

Visa retrogression is 5 to 7 years right now, I think?

Specializes in Medical and general practice now LTC.

As mentioned on another website.

You need clinical and theory hours in Paeds, Mental Health, Obstetrics and Adult. If you are short of hours in any area then you will have issues. Currently no place in the UK offers catch up courses. In the Us many International Educated Nurses are finding issues finding nursing schools that will allow students to join just to make up hours and not do the complete course.

Be aware I am not saying impossible but hard.

Finding employer willing to wait the 1-3 years it will take once you have passed NCLEX to get to the US and work will be difficult.

Nurses generally come under EB3 so check the dates here Visa Bulletin
