OK, I really need some advice and everyone around me is pretty much just giving me the run around and telling me to do what I want:o
I have an oppertunity to get into get into this April class....there is about 5 spots. I will have to pay about 135 for the background check/app fee.
Now they are having an class starting in October.
I am thinking about aiming for the October class and this is why~
My score on the HESI wa 75.5 and I scored very low in the Reading comp section. The nursing director even made a couple of comments to me about it.
I will also lose all of the 135 and have to reapply in October again and retake the test. Do another background check(85) and pay the (50) app fee
This is also among the other things I will have to require to start the program.....laptop(mom told me she would buy me one:) ), shots, ie.
I will also be giving up my job which is a big prob but I am wondering b/c I wont be working for almost 2 1/2 years if I should try to save money for a year and then go from there.
It is a competed program so if people come in and score higher on the HESI I can be bumped out.
ANY AND ALL FEEDBACK WELCOME!

It sounds like you already know what you want to do. If you need the time to save money and study up, then I say go for your October goal. Are you sure you will be able to get into the October openings? If you have the time and you want to be sure you will be prepared financially, mentally, and scholastically, I would wait if you have the option. :)
I want to get going in school more then anything I just dont want to have to quit because I wasnt prepared or lose all that money if I dont have a chance.
~I will have a pretty good chance becuase I can be the 1st in there to retest and I now know what i need to do on the test.

Everything is a risk. Go for it and good luck.
I risked going to an unaccredited college........(new program). I trusted it would become accredited and just before I applied it did. Now there is a massive explosion in enrollement even more so than it already was......
Follow your heart. WE cannot decide for you.
Good luck

When you say unaccredited do you mean, like you had to pay full out of pocket for school? There is a school like that here DSON but it is like 1300

well, knowing what i do about waiting and how many people are trying to get a spot, i personally would take the FIRST spot available because there are no guarantees.
that said, the reading thing may be a problem because nursing classes are reading intensive. you may need to be tutored while in school now.
you stated a lot of cons for starting now, so maybe you need to wait, but weigh everything carefully!
This is true, I think I am going to put my name in and if I dont get in well.....I dont.
I was really shocked when I didnt score higher on the reading comp, because I am usually pretty good on reading comp test. So go figure:-)

Hi,
If I were in your shoes, I would not enroll in the nursing program until I had objective test results that indicated I would be successful in nursing school. If you scored low on reading comprehension on the HESI, I would ask my college to give me a reading placement test to determine your level of comprehension objectively. I am thinking that a specific reading comprehension test would be a more accurate judge of your ability because it's a specialized test, not just one section out of a larger test.
I do not think you should let $270.00 dictate your course of action. I think that enrolling in a nursing program (which is VERY reading intensive) would be more expensive in other ways than losing $270.00. You should consider the emotional cost of starting a program and having to run up hill on basic skills the entire time. You'd be making an already stressful situation alot more stressful.
With that said, I definitely do not think you should abandon your goals just because of a deficit (if it exists) in reading comprehension. I would take a semester or two to take classes that will increase your reading comprehension...then reapply. You'd probably do better on the HESI too.
In summary: Ask your school to give you a placement test for reading comprehension. If it is low, fix this first and then go to nursing school.
Best wishes!
Adri
I am thinking I will ask for a reading comp test. I would hate to get in and not be able to keep up with the reading:no:
The nice thing about the school is that there is no waiting list. They take the best canidates so that is way I am really worried about my lower reading comp. score. The sad thing is that I was teriffied of the math section and I did the best on that! I scored an 86.7 so go figure. But I did score in the 60's in the reading comp so I might go and take a reading class to help buff my skills up:confused:

I feel the need to put my 2 cents worth in since I just took the NET yesterday and barely passed the reading section. I have taken A&P I and all other classes except A&P II and Micro and have made A's! Yet on the NET I made a 58% on the reading comp portion (50% being passing) ! I know I am bright and capable of reading and understanding information. I WILL NOT let my NET test score make me feel unqualified - AND YOU SHOULDN'T EITHER!!! I know we must have standardized testing; however, I don't think the results indicate a person's true "smartness" or ability.
I'm not sure about the competition in your area - but here in the Dallas area it is stiff!! If I were guaranteed a spot in a program I would JUMP ON IT, because a spot later may not be guaranteed.
Follow your dreams girl! We only get one shot at this life. If you are determined to make it as a nurse and that desire drives you, then you will succeed in school because you will do whatever it takes to be a good student.
Good luck to you - whatever you decide! This group will be here for you regardless!

Hello Coloradogrl-
I just moved here from TX and am trying to get into DSON. I did my research and dont feel like being on a waiting list for the next 2yrs. I will hopefully be getting into the ADN program- I take the HESI tommorow and I'm pretty nervous. I was curious what program you might be getting into. BTW I had the same issue as you 2 yrs ago. Should I stop working now or should I keep working and save up?? I decided to work for another year(here I am 2 yrs later)and save up some money which is helpful considering the cost of DSON. So here's my opinion- school is hard no matter what month it starts in and its very costly, I'm ready to get it over with! are you? :) Best of Luck!
