:heartbeatdear my fellow and future nurses,
i just want everyone to know that i passed the nclex-rn!! i took the exam on wednesday aug 13th (last week) and found out on friday the 15th that i was officially a rn. i must say i worked very hard and am very happy to see that my efforts were worth it. like many, my computer shut off at 75qs and i thought it was over. started thinking about how i was going to approach studying for the exam the second time around because i was sure i was going to have to take it again. but low and behold, i looked on the ct bon on friday and there was my name.
what is interesting about my nclex experience is the amount of math questions i got. i literally got about 12 questions. once i realized that i kept getting math qs i thought i was failing because i read on here that math qs are of lower difficulty; obviously that can not be true because i passed. what i think happened was that i was getting a few wrong here and there so i probably continued to get the math until i proved that could solve the problems. i had a lot of converting mcg, g, kg, million units so i am sure i was misplacing zeros and decimals here and there. in addition to the math i had a few sata about 10 of those, priority/assignment, meds, infection control, psych, therapeutic communication and an ecg strip. i didn't have many priority/delegation ( about 5 total) and that also worried me at first because i thought those were higher level questions.
what i recommend for studying hands down is the saunders book for starters. i read the 4th edition front to back and also did questions on the cd on topics i wasnt really strong on. after i felt i had the knowledge down i started working with kaplan. i was enrolled on the complete course so i did the in class sessions as well as the qbank. i completed all the q bank questions and did all the question trainers except for the last one 7. in addition i ordered the prioritizing, delegation and assignment book that was recommended on this website by many. i didn't do all the exercises but i did a fair amount and found the book very useful. the final tool i used for studying was the nursing extension 3 week course and that i used strictly for questions.
the last thing i want to say here is that when your taking the exam and begin to get increasingly tense and anxious because you feel like your not answering right and getting things wrong or getting the same type of questions over and over take a break and step away from the comp. for me i started realizing around question 55 that i was getting many math problems. if at the point i gave up and started answering questions haphazardly i probably would have failed. instead, i took a break got up and walked for a couple minutes and gathered myself and came back to the test saying i was going to give it my all. from 55 to 75 i was answering with confidence again and i think that really made the difference for me.
so that's my story guys. thanks to everyone on all nurses.com because i really learned a lot from reading threads and reading about others experiences. feel free to contact me with questions or concerns. i am so excited to start my career as a labor and delivery nurse! the best of luck to all!!!!! :redbeathe:nurse:

i'm so happy for you. congrats!!! i just finished taking the boards today and i feel like a have an ulcer in my stomach. that's how nervous i am right now. in fact, i don't even know how i'll survive these two days waiting for the results. like you, i also had a few med questions that seemed like they were being repeated. hope that's not a bad thing. the computer shut-off at 75 so i don't know:heartbeat. please keep me in your prayers.
