How difficult did you find it to find a job after graduating and how did you go about looking for a job?

That's wonderful!! Happy One Year!!!
Well, my first choice after graduating and passing boards was to try to get a job in a hospital on a med surg floor. But, that didn't work out for me. So, after a month of applying to every hosptial within an hour and having no luck. I decided to look for other options. I ended up getting called back by 3 LTC facilities. I accepted the one I felt I would gain the most experience with. It was a LTC facility for dd children. The majority were high acuity with G-tubes and trachs. I worked there for 8 months, it was a hard job, but I did learn a lot! I still wanted to work at a hospital so I was still seeking that, and I was also interested in Home Health Care. So I applied to a small local home health company, and was hired the same day as my interview with them. after 6 weeks of working there I got a call for a med surg postion at very small rural hospital . It was a tough choice because I really liked the home care . But, I decided to take the med surg position.
I am so happy that I did. I love it!! the nurses are absolutely the best!! Everyone has made me so welcome and many have told me how happy they are to have me there. It is a small hospital so we don't get a lot of exciting cases but that is ok with me. I am an older new nurse and I didn't get into nursing for the excitement. There is also a lot of cross training done with the other departments. I know some people don't like to float. But, it really appeals to me. I am in that stage where I just want to learn everything I can. I don't really know what specialty I want to end up...so that is why med surg and the idea of floating are great for me. I get a chance to try out some different areas and see something different everyday:)
I know by reading a lot of the posts on here, that I am pretty blessed to have found some good jobs, and I am thankful for that. I was really freaked out last year this time, wondering if I was going to be able to find a job, my advice is...don't get hung up on the perfect job scenario. Have an open mind and think outside the box. Any nursing job offers experience that can be useful to a new nurse trying to get started.
Good luck!!
