I need an NCLEX study buddy.

Published

I graduated nursing school in December 2012 and took the NCLEX the following January. I took the hurst review before I tested the first time and felt it was $300 wasted. When I failed the first time, I knew then I should've saved the 300. I tested in August and failed again. Now I am working on the 45 day review from hurst but it doesn't seem like much help. I am only doing this because it was offered at no charge and I don't know what else to do. What I really need is one on one guidance to help me better understand how to test. Some material I am a little rusty on but I am studying these areas. Even though I know my material I cannot answer these questions correctly. Does anybody know of a study buddy that can work via FaceTime or maybe in person? I live in south Mississippi. Maybe a certain program? I'm not seeking pity; I just need some guidance for I have NEVER tested well with standardized tests.

You need what is known as an educational learning consultant. This is someone who specializes in identifying and treating the sort of deficits you have, not a nursing content specialist. Find one of those and get cracking.

I failed like 6 times...I used hurst the first time and failed; but that was because I only did the material and videos. The second time using this; I did most of the videos and just kept doing the qreview; whatever my score was I would read it all over and the rationales. At first I was scoring at like 47% then 50% then finally 63% and 70%. All I did was practice practice practice...I passed yesterday on 9/30/13 102 questions with the good pop up.I was horrible also with picking answers but I got it finally. I was only able to study for 2 weeks; 2-4 hours a day. Don't give up! keep practicing questions. good luck!

Based on my experience, I don't think nclex is as hard as what people made it to be. I only do questions after questions and never touch any of the core contents and still pass at 75. Recommend Kaplan trainer questions. Those r all I did for my nclex preparation. The questions in nursing school tests r way harder than nclex. If I don't study core contents and still pass with 75 questions, anybody would pass with it too. Just know what they're asking for and most of the nclex questions are straight forward, unlike those test questions from nursing school. This is the truth and relax because nclex isn't all that bad.

hey im not able to message you @dhillons so im just posting it on this thread...

Thank you :) ... Im not sure if the questions from 2008 Kaplan qbanks -present are the same; but if you are concerned Kaplan does have a book called Kaplan NCLEX RN 2013-2014 I bought the book and compared the questions to the online Kaplan qbank and the questions are the same if not similar. I think PDA is a great resource. The questions are definitely harder than Kaplan, but the rationales are awesome. I am not familiar with davis or feuer audios. I swear by Saunders Comprehensive Review book for content. It helped me answer questions in Kaplan.

When doing questions you should analyze what you are doing. Are you getting the questions wrong because you are not familiar with the topic or do not know what strategy to use to answer the question.

I say pick a content book for things you need to review, and a good question book which you have is PDA. A couple days before the test review your labs. The day before the test you should not study at all. Go out and have fun. Relax. On test day get those earplugs. If you pass 75 questions do not panic you are still in the game stay focused. You will do great. Hopefully I helped you.

Thanks for all the responses. My main problem would be I do not know what the question wants me to answer. I understand the question (sometimes), but I have not been able to answer correctly. Saunders questions I usually get right with no problem (90-95% correct).

I think that what you need is to take one of the review courses. They tell you how to decipher what the question is really asking.

Hey HeavyD

I totally understand your frustrations!! I graduated in April of 2012...basically in a nut shell...I have now taken the exam twice...failed twice! I have done the review from the nursing board twice, I have done the "blue" Saunders book 95% finished plus the questions online and now I'm signed up for Kaplan! On the first exam I ran out of time and on the second exam it shut me off at 75! I personally feel that I don't understand what the questions are asking at times...sometimes I get the hardest questions correct and the easisest questions wrong! My confidence is down and I know eveyone says that you have to "think positive" but it is really difficult to do that especially when I take questions and my scores are constantly in the 50s-60s and on occasion low 70s! I review all rationals and go into my books to review or look up things I don't remember, I write out notes, make notecards and I still feel completely lost!!! I wish you the best of luck, don't give up!!!

Hello Heavy D. Im in the same boat as you. I am looking for a study buddy also. I test again for the second time at the end of November n would really like to start study again with someone. I am a person that likes to talk it out. And I also am not a standardized good test taker. So I do understand.

I found the Kaplan review course (on-line - $500) to be very helpful. The decision tree and qtrainers really helped me. The trick is definitely figuring out what the question is asking! I tested last Saturday, computer shut off after 75 questions and I got the good PVT pop up. Practice, practice, practice! Good Luck!
