I need info on Scrub Skirts please!

Published

Hello,

I am a Pentecostal woman, who wears skirts instead of pants for religious reasons. I am about to start nursing school at UT in January. Is it okay for me to wear scrub skirts in a clinical setting? What about in the OR? I hope to be a CRNA one day, but I have heard that skirts are not allowed in the OR. Have any of you experienced wearing scrub skirts? Also, were you made to feel weird or unaccepted?

I am worried that A) I will not be allowed or B) I will feel like an outcast. Experienced opinions are greatly appreciated! Thanks :)

I went through nursing school with a girl that only wore skirts... she had no problems... I don't think you should either. I'm not sure about the OR tho... Good luck finding some good answers. To be sure, you could always call the school and find out what their dress code is :)

Specializes in MICU - CCRN, IR, Vascular Surgery.

One of my nursing school friends is Pentecost and wears skirts to clinical, no issues or problems for her at all. As for the OR and skirts, I'd call someone and ask about that.

Specializes in CCU, SICU, CVSICU, Precepting & Teaching.

a woman who works in our or wears scrub dresses, not skirts. she has to wear a particular kind of hose with them. another woman wears scrub dresses with pants under them. not sure how that would fit in with your religious limitations.

Specializes in Pediatric Pulmonology and Allergy.

I had a few classmates who wore only skirts. The school did not give any grief over it. In the OR, they wore disposable scrub pants with an OR gown over it.

Thank you everybody! Your comments are very reassuring. I will call the school to be certain, but I appreciate your answers!

Enjoy your nursing program.

Nurse_mahoney did you ever find skirts that you were content with?

Me and my daughter wear scrub skirts to work. Go to taffords.com and look at their scrub skirts. They are very cute and modest. It is the only ones we wear!

i personally know an RN, who is a Sister (NUN) and all she wears are those, outfits nuns wear but in all white, with the white habit and she's been there for years , i dont think they have a problem with skirts hehe :)
