So, I recently moved to Florida last year and got a job as a Float RN, mostly medical-surgical, and I have been at this job for 5 months. I have two years experience in the ER prior to that. Well, I'm just not feeling it.
I jumped right out of nursing school into the ER, when I move I thought I would try something different just to expand my experience. Well, now I regret not going for an ER position, I didn't realize how lucky I was to land an ER position right out of nursing school. I miss it so much.
So, in April my 6 months will be up and I can start applying for internal transfers and I REALLY want to transfer to the ER. But now, my manager is wanting me to train to be a charge nurse. I'm not sure I want to do this, at all. I was planning on speaking to him closer to April about applying for ER positions, but now I feel I need to do it sooner before he starts adding orientation days for the charge position.
So, my question is, how do I go about speaking to my manager about this? And should I do it ASAP?

You definitely want to speak with your manager right away. Gather your thoughts and your words. Be specific, appreciative, and grateful in your approach. But, don't be surprised if your manager blocks your transfer. If he's considering training you to be charge or relief charge, he has a need for your presence on his unit; and since he opened the door for your entry into this facility and helped you to get acclimated to your new surroundings, he may not be agreeable to a transfer after only a few months. Make sure your presentation to him is on point because your don't know for sure if the ER manager will accept you there (they may be looking at/for someone with more experience than you have). If you speak to the ER manager, he or she will surely phone your manager. So, I'd speak to my current manager first if I were you.
Good luck!
