I have been off for quite a while now. I hated it while I was there due to politics, backstabbing and just general unpleasantness among coworkers. Now I am missing it. How can I be a nurse and avoid the politics and backstabbing? How can I continue to do what I love and not feel miserable because its so stressful and well .. hating being dumped on by coworkers and doctors.
Help.

Work PRN at several different facilities. That way you can choose the hours/ shifts you want and avoid most of the politics.

Try working nights or PRN. I have not been able to work since November 28, 1988. And I miss my ability to work terribly. I am now rapidly approaching 62 and cannot retutrn even if I were forced to. Politics and back stabbing exist in all types of work. There is no perfect work place. One has to take the bad with the good, at least that is what I believe.

i'd like to know the answer to this myself.
i am miserable in nursing these days too. i'm a new grad thinking, "what the hell was i thinking when i decided to get into this mess?"
there were so many promises of making a difference, the shortage and it's countless opportunities, and the hospitals promising to value nurses and prepare them/help them establish their careers.
i am so absolutely jaded.

Maybe teaching? It's not like we don't need more instructors, and you'd still get the hands-on patient care taking your students through clinicals. Most places probably require at least a masters though...

PRN!!!! Thats what I do........When I got out of school in May 06' I was so disappointed with what "nursing" really was so around my 4th month into working, i started looking for other jobs. I finally got one working in precert.........I started it last month and I love it! The hours, the less stress, its great.........and I do my 2 12 hour PRN shifts a month and thats it. I am so happy that I am PRN...........all that drama and backstabbing is ridiculous...........its not present at the intensity it is the hospital in some other places.......the hospital can make you feel so crazy.........its almost like you're in survival mode all the time.......no staff, no supplies,no respect. I understand why there is so much craziness...........and I am glad I got out. Much happier now!!!!

Take a pool position. That way you float from unit to unit each shift and don't have time to get caught up in politics and backstabbing.
Hey Everyone,
Thanks for the feedback. I agree, PRN (Casual/Float) position would be the answer to my problem. I have already decided that starting January that is exactly what I will be doing!! I will be starting work sometime in September I am guessing, and being back in the OR will require me to get reaquainted with a few things. I'm hoping that I can get a part-tiem or casual position in my OR and then work Casual in Psych in a different hospital. That way I won't ever feel as if I'm "stuck" and get caught up in so much drama.
Ohhhhhh I can't wait to get a couple more months of experience in the OR under my belt before I can BOLT!! Loll !! I wonder how will my manager would be to let me switch to a part time position .. hmmmmm !!
