I would like to go into labor and delivery (New Graduate 2012)

Published

Hi:)

I am graduating from nursing school with my bachalors degree in May 2012. I will be taking my NCLEX as soon as possible. I want to know how difficult or easy it may be to get right into a labor and delivery unit.

Specializes in labor & delivery.

It depends on your area and the hospital. The hospitals in my area usually want experience for L&D. They will hire a new grad once in a while, but with the economy getting tighter, the unit wants experience so they do not have to spend the money to train anyone. It helps if you know someone in the area you wish to work. If you still have to do a preceptorship, you may be able to do one on an L&D unit and make some contacts. It is difficult to get into L&D as a new grad, but not impossible. If that is your dream job, do not give up. Even if you have to take another job first, keep trying. You may be able to start in postpartum or couplet care as well. I had to start in postpartum, which was a great experience. Good luck to you!!
