So a nurse practitioner saved my life. I had already decided I wanted to be one someday, but the experience really reinforced my desire to be one someday. Look I know I have no business aspiring to that when I have not even gained acceptance into the ADN program I am trying to get into, but the idea of someday being an NP keeps me going. I am under no illusions I am the best canidate because of my previous mistakes. Flunked out of a university because of health reasons, and being young and dumb. However I am told I am a decent candidate for the ADN program I am applying to so that is my first priority this fall I apply assuming I score well enough on the Teas test. I really want to make this a reality someday. As a result I am tutoring, and peer mentoring to help my less than stellar GPA. After my last prereq it's at around 3.35 overal with a lot of frivolous cs dragging it down from when I was young, stupid, and didn't know what I wanted. It's early in the process for me, since I take my final prereq for the ADN program this fall, but what proactive steps can I take to increase my chance down the line if I can make it that far. It is never to early to formulate a plan, and have an endgame. So any advice for a pre nursing male who is learning as he goes, but wants to go as far as he is capable. I love the idea of being a nurse, and want to take it as far as I am personally able. Basically what early steps can I take to help me recover from my youthful debacles.

After the ADN, go for rn to bsn program. Do good on the adn and bsn grades and u won't have a problem getting into a fnp program. But that is a long ways down the road for ya. Focus on passing your adn program first is my advice.
Ya I hear it's brutal, and they only take those who have As in the science prereqs. Which means I really need an A in my last prereq this fall. Sorry I know it's early. It's just I don't go back to school untill the 24th, and whenever I have free time I look for ways to boost my chances. Basically what I am asking is should I volunteer more? I know focus on the task at hand its just that well. You know what I will volunteer at the hospital that saved my life in my free time thanks for the inspiration! I think more volunteer work is a good idea. It makes me feel good, and well it cannot hurt my chances. I suppose I am looking for more that I can do. I know its a long way down the road for me its just I feel like I cannot afford any more mistakes in my life if I want to someday get where I want to be. Pursuing nursing is really all consuming for me, and I wish I where superman. Small steps I know its just that well its hard not to look into the future for me since it took me so long to figure out what I want to do. Now that I have settled on it I don't want to waste anymore time. Any time not spent eating and breathing nursing, and its prereqs/ coreqs for me is time wasted. *Sigh* I am on a mission to burn myself out. It is good advice, but I dream of being a np someday. So I am thinking what little steps can I take now to help me down the road.

Bro, I know exactly what you are talking about. An RN saved my life and made me realize that I was ment to be in nursing. I am currently working on getting into a prelicensure to BSN program. Just focus on your non science and science GPAs and get into an ADN program. Once you do that, do well in those classes. Then, you shouldn't have a problem getting into fnp program. Good luck!
It's just that I had nothing to offer these people, and they worked their buts off to make me better. I know it's their job, but I feel like every moment not pursuing nursing is a moment wasted.
bro, I hear you. But don't think you have nothing to offer. You have HEART. While that cannot be measured, it is an attribute that cannot be ignored. Let's face it, there are a ton of RNs and PAs in the system that just care about the money. All they care about is passing go and collecting 200 dollars. But not us. We GIVE A **** about the patients. We care. We want to be there when the patient feels like there is no one else, like there is no one else to care....WE will be there. Hell man, I honestly had no idea how much RNs get paid for until 2 weeks ago. Why? Because I didn't care. I wanna help people. Plain and simple. I am going to sound like Shia Labeouf for a minute but FIGHT for your dream. Don't let ANYONE tell you otherwise. Keep fighting until your heart stops. If it is your dream, fight for it.
I will say this, and go to bed. If I wanted money I would get a bussiness degree. Not that there is anything wrong with that. For me though I need a degree, and a career that is more than dollar signs. I know it's customer service still, and I will likely have patients that drive me mad, but they are ill. They don't want to be there. I just feel like I need my idealism to be able to survive from a soul standpoint. I need to contribute in a manner that matters on a deeply personal level, or I am wasting my time. Every moment not making myself into that person is a moment I have wasted.
All my illness entitles me too is an oportunity to correct past mistakes, and work my but off. It does not entitle me to become a RN. I just want to know what more I can do to better my chances.

You're revving your engine so hard you're going to shoot a piston through your skull!
Take a deeeeppp breath, blow it out, and let your shoulders relax!
You could research and try out different methods of studying to see which one(s) works the best for you......
Yes well I am super excited, and I really hope I get into nursing school just to be there would be a blessing. I really hope I get in you have no idea how excited I am for the prospect of nursing. Education is something I used to take for granted, but no longer do. Its a lot of work.... So I try to rev my self up. I am unfortunately not the most intelligent of individuals so I have to put in like 20 hours of studying a week just for 3bs, and an A. Its very frustrating, and I hear nursing school makes the best students look average. I am going to need to figure something out to improve my academic standing. Better note taking, and focus methods perhaps. THANKS!
