Hi All,

I just applied to the evening program at BMCC this past Monday. The counselor told me that I have a good chance of getting in... so I am really happy about that. Well, now I have to wait until the second week of June to get an answer. That is when he said that we would find out if we got accepted or not.

Well, I have a few questions that I hope a few can answer for me. Here goes:

1) I have a classmate that I've been studying with for the last two semester; we've been in the same classes. We study very well together and so far always get A's on our tests. He also has a really good chance of getting in so we expect to continue to study together. Well, we heard that the class gets divided into groups to do clinicals. We are wondering if we can request to be in the same group. Do you think this is possible? How are the professors? I don't want to step on any toes and start the semester off in a bad way. What do you think?

2) Do we have to wear a uniform in class?

3) Do we need to take any course before we start our first semester in the program.... like BLS and ACLS, etc?

4) Do we need to purchase ? How much is it? Where to we purchase it?

5) Oh, we were told that if we are accepted we must attend orientation on July 5th. How long will that day be? What do they tell us there?

6) What hospitals does BMCC send you to do to clinicals? How does that work? How was your first day in clinicals?

7) Last question for now... my family has been planning a short vacation together and I don't want to miss it. I just plan to miss a Thursday and a Saturday (clinical) class. So a total of two school days. Will this break me? Will the professor understand that this family vacation is more than a year in the making?

Thank you to all that can answer any of my questions. I am really excited and hope to be accepted to the program.

Thanks again!

Congratulations on finishing all the pre-reqs and applying! Now for the waiting part :uhoh3:

Answers to your questions, based on my experience at BMCC -

1 -In the clinical classes, you're subdivided into groups at the hospitals. So each group goes with one clinical instructor to the floor. I wouldn't think that you would really need to be in the same clinical, in order to study together. Although if you were in the same hospital, and met after clinicals to study, this would be helpful! But its not necessary to be assigned to the same group.

2 - OMG, yes you have to wear a uniform to the saturday clincals at the hospital (but not in lectures at night). For us, they were horrible blue and white uniforms, reminicent of a hotel maid's uniform:lol2: . Although i did hear a rumor that they were going to update them?

3 - You do need to be certified in CPR, BLS. Go for the 2 year certification from the American Red Cross. You'll be thankful when you don't have to renew it in the middle of the program.

4 - You do need to purchase -- From NSO, which is also online, it can be purchased for $20/yr.

5 - I honestly cannot remember the orientation for clinicals.

6- Our first year, we were sent to Bellvue Hospital and Mary Manning Walsh Nursing Center. I'm not sure what you mean, about "how does that work". The first day, our group took a tour of the floor and basically got to know a hospital -- where everything was, how things ran. Other hospitals were Metropolitan, Bronx Lebanon, Lincoln, Woodhull, Cabrini.

7 - You're allowed to miss only ONE saturday clinical for the entire semester. So if you're sure that you can make every other one, then personally, i would go for it. I missed clinical for weddings and important family functions. But i attended every other clinical before and after that.

Good luck with school and if you have any other questions, you can PM me!

You Can Only Miss 1 Clinical, So Be Wise About It!!!

Last Semester Someone Was Kicked Out Of The Program.

She Said That She Was In The Hospital, Yet That Did Not Make A Difference.
