I hate having nursing branches. ARGH

Published

Hi

I hate having nursing branches. I am on a HNC and I have a nursing placement on a Adult ward. I will not say what. I am enjoying my experience and I say that if I could get an auxiliary job on the ward I would. It is so good.

I like adult nursing because you get to see the body and it is the most general nursing degree offered in the uk. However I like the Idea of mental health nursing as well. That is my problem. I do not know what to do.

I do not know if I should apply for adult nursing because it is so general(and I enjoy it) and then get the degree, work for a time and then go and do the mental health 2 year registered nurse shortened course. I also do not know that if I enjoy my first year mental health placement more than adult placement this year if I could talk to the course leader and move to mental health.

I just do not know. I am so confused with what to do. I wish that I could just become a general nurse and then had to decide. God I hate nursing branches.

Thanks in advance.

Dilemma hey... :/

Why don't you volunteer in mental health get a feel for it more, I think in a placement you don't see much of the actual working of the unit as a student.

just a thought.

Hi azalight90

Well i qualified back in the stone age then had 10 yrs out, I came back into nursing in 2000 and did the conversion course and wow did that open my eyes to mental health...we weren't allowed to do this as a placement when I trained originally and because I was by then older with financial commitments, not entirely my own, I couldnt take advantage of side stepping into mental health....if it lights your fire go for it, I say, you ll be motivated, interested and a great nurse because of it and doing what you love. Better than doing what you think you should do, and the great thing about nursing is that you can always retrace your steps and complete general nursing at a later date if you want to...
