I am so excited about this and a little scared!:balloons: I have done clinical rotations but I am sure that things will be a bit different. I was intially looking for one in Atlanta because that is where I will be relocating to after graduation and it is very competitive here because there are only 2 hospitals here , but I decided to apply for the externship anyways and got It! Any suggestions for maximizing my experience in the Nicu!??
I just wanted to share this with you all, wish me luck!!

I am an extern in a NICU also. I love it. I have decided that there is nowhere I would rather work than the NICU. Good luck! You will find that there are so many babies that don't have proper support, and you will want to take every one of them home with you...at least I do. There is something about those tiny babies looking into your eyes when you are feeding them. They are so precious and helpless. And it is so wonderful to see the ones that do have loving parents go home! These babies are the BEST patients in the world. MUCH better than adults...IMHO.

I have to say I am jealous of you guys. I applied for an externship in the NICU but got newborn nursery instead. Maybe it will be a good start ? I am still excited though. Any experience is good. Good luck this summer!!!!
Aww, I'm sorry you didn't get an externship in the NICU. At least you get to work w/babies though, all babies are good patients! Perhaps you will get to move to the NICU at some point. ??
Thank you everyone! I cant wait! Abby I am sorry that you didnt get the NICU, I want to work in newborn nursery also. I want to work with the sick and healthy babies. I am crossing my fingers that you will get a chance to work in nicu soon. Good luck on you externship and keep me posted.

Congratulations, guys!
The NICU and NBN are both great places that require us as nurses to be at our best. The nursery kids can get sick just as quickly as the NICU kids. I wish you good luck!
As a new neo nurse there are lots of ups and downs - good days and bad - but hang in there! In the grand scheme of things, we're really lucky to be able to do what we do.
Thanks for all of your encouragement. So where is everyone at in their schooling ? I have one year left! I am so ready to be done and begin working. My NICU here, however, is VERY hard to get into and we can't move because of the military

Take all the time you can to just sit and rock them. Don't listen to anyone who tells you you're "spoiling" them. They're babies! And they're sick and alone much of the day. Snuggle, snuggle, snuggle.
I have one year left also and I cant wait to finish! I know that this year will go by fast. We have 2 nicu's here and it is not too hard to get in to the but I do not want to live here...

Stupid question....What's an "externship"?
