today was the last day of clinical for ob. all the other students worked on post-partum and nursery but i got to go to nicu ! the other students were complaining all day about not being over to go to nicu and they kept asking me why i got to go... the instructor and i just kept telling them that they were too busy( which they were). as the instructor was walking down to nicu she told me i got to go to nicu because i have showed compotency in clinical and i pretty much got every thing down packed in this rotation.
i felt very honored. she says she only select certain students to go and that made me feel good. personally, i believe all of my fellow nursing students classmates should of had a chance to go, but i'm sure when they become nurses they may have that chance. ofcourse i didn't brag to them about it like i'm doing now, but honestly i worked very hard and i deserved to go.
just wanted to share my great experience today.

Congrats.
Oh my gosh thanks, and I totally just realized I need to utilize spell check. I'm the worlds worst speller ! ( If that made sense LOL)
Or you could get Firefox. It is a much safer and prettier browser that has a built in spell check. Any time you type anywhere, it will underline anything spelled wrong. Right click and fix! :)

That is really awesome! During my OB clinical rotation no one was allowed to go to the NICU due to "scheduling conflicts". I'm so jealous!
So tell us, how did you like the NICU??

Congratulations! When my daugher was in the NICU (4 months), I only saw 2 students (the whole 4 months) allowed to come in for clinicals! Very impressive!

Actually, it wasn't anything " exciting" going on. Its very quiet and dim because the babies need minimum stimulation. When newborns are stimulated my sounds or lights they have increased O2 consumption thus it puts them at risk for RDS. So it was very low key.
The smallest baby I seen was 1lb14 ounces, very small. Alot of the babies where on TPN and it was heartbreaking to see them hooked up to so many monitors and tubing. Some of the babies were on CPAP and Bi PAP.
I also saw twins and I was told my the nurse that the twins only had 6 months to live, due to a neuromuscular disease.
The incubators the babies are placed in mimics the uterus. They sleep on a mattress that moves kinda like a air bed/water bed. The temp. is also set on a temp. to maintain their heat. Most of the incubators are covered with a blanket, to once again prevent stimulation.
It was a great experience and I felt honored. Ofcourse I was humble to my class mates and never told them the real reason why I went, but I'm glad I did.
