I work in an assisted living facility. I work 2 7-3 shifts and 3 3-11 shifts every week. There is only one other nurse who works weekends besides the DON and I. Before I came they used to both work on the monthly summaries and the recaps. Since I started working there I have been helping out with these things. This month, I did all of the recaps myself, did 76 out of 84 monthly summaries, and had to change all of the meds in the med cart by myself (normally my DON and I do it). I don't want to start trouble because I have only been there 3 months but I don't want to be taken advantage of either. I don't mind doing my share of the work don't get me wrong, but I don't think it is fair for me to have to do all of it.
I guess I just needed to get this out. I really don't know what the point of this post was but thanks for "listening". Any suggestions on how to approach the situation would be welcomed!!

Speak to your DON, just be sure you are in the right frame of mind. You don't want to be too aggresive, but you also need to get your point across. they probably think at this point you believe everything you are doing, is what you alone are supposed to be doing. If you don't question it, they will continue to let you keep doing what everyone should be contributing to, and, it will probably get worse. LTC facilities are always hiring, and you can get a job somewhere else, and maybe have co-workers who share more of the workload. You have enough to do, don't let them bury you even deeper!!!

stop doing so much. Do your fair share, and leave the rest. Are you being specifically asked to do all the monthly summaries, etc? Or are you just doing them because no one else is?
Doing your work and no one else's is not "starting trouble". Believe me, the rest of the work will get done, once they realize you're not doing it all anymore. It's your DON's job to make sure all the work is done, anyway. Let her pick up some slack and delegate to the other nurse if need be.

Your DON may be handing you extra work to see if you are willing to step up and go the extra mile. She may have you in mind for a raise or a promotion and she may be doing this to test your abilities and initiative.
I could be wrong, but this is the first thing I thought of. When I am handed extra work, I do it gladly and willingly and I try to do my best, as it usually comes up during my yearly evaluation and can mean the difference between a 2% and a 7% raise.

My 1st thought was that your DON obviously trusts you to do those tasks well and do them right. I would take it as a compliment and not that I'm being dumped on. I also agree with the above poster, your DON may have something in mind for you and this is a test to see how you handle it.
Unless these tasks are interfereing with your time on the floor (making med passes difficult, etc), causing you to stay long after your shift is over, etc, I would keep doing it. It'll pay off in the end.
