I dream of a working in a hospital

I am a 30 year old female that recently got my RN. I've worked in nursing homes since I was 16 as a CNA/CMA and use to love it, but now I am just burnt out and really desire a job in a hospital. The problem is when I was 21 I got charged with an assault and attempted burglary. It was a situation that involved my boyfriend in bed with someone else and a poor decision on my part. Even those these charges are so old and I haven't been in any trouble since, these charges still keep me from working in a hospital. The state I live in does NOT expunge or seal these types of charges. My question is are then any hospitals that will hire me with this kind of record? I'm young, single, and have no kids so I was looking to relocate from my small town. I really was unsure of where I wanted to move too so I'm hoping to just go where I can find work doing what I dream.

Have you worked as an RN, at all? Have employers specifically stated that your record is what's keeping them from hiring you? My answer for everything difficult is "border town", although there are certainly no guarantees. Have you applied anywhere out of your area yet?

I've always been very upfront with what's on my record and get told it should be fine. But then once it comes back I get told that I'm too much of a " liability issue" with an assault on my record

Yep, that definitely sounds like a hard one to overcome. "Border town" is still my best suggestion. If they're not desperate enough to give you a chance, I don't know who will be.

If you're currently employed in a SNF, I'd say that's a very fortunate thing. Things could have worked out in a worse way.

I'm from South Texas and under the impression that cities on/near the Texas/Mexico border are always desperate for nurses. I haven't been there for quite a while though, so ...

Try McAllen, Texas?

Try places that are further away from major cities. My employer would hire someone with a record as long as their nursing license was in good standing and the charge was more than a certain number of years ago (I think 5 but I'm not sure). All you can do is apply and see.

I have worked in LTC and acute care. I was like you and had dreams of working in the hospital. Once I got in there it was just as bad as LTC. The grass isn't always greener.

Look for rural, underserved areas that are desperate for nurses. Think Indian reservations and places along the Texas/Mexico border and outlying areas in Alaska.
