Here's the dilemma. I work as a nurse extern for two different hospitals. One hospital I work at is on a Med-surg floor on a midnight shift where I float often and they use there nurse extern for nurse's aides, I feel as if I am not learning anything. But this hospital makes good money, more than the other hospital I work at and they have excellent benefits. The other hospital I work at is a bigger, more updated hospital in the PACU department as a nurse extern. Here they make less money but the nurses there treats me like a nurse extern and not an aide. Meaning, they precept me into the RN role not just using me to take vitals and feeding patients.
What do I do when it's time to graduate. I feel that the bigger hospital I work at in PACU is a great opportunity to start as a graduate nurse, but med-surg at the other hospital that pays better is a good opportunity too???????? Help me??????????????????????????

I second the motion!
The better fit, the better externship/orientation, the happier the new nurse!
I oriented for 12 weeks LOL on my telemetry floor and got the best of help as a new nurse! Go for the pay when you have experience under your belt is my thought...but great coworkers don't come easy.

I would focus on learning and go with the smaller hospital.

I agree with the other posters as I also did a nurse externship in CCU in which they treated me very well and equally. The only thing I really didnt get to do was meds. When I graduated I transitioned into this same unit as an RN and it made it so much easier particularly since the staff already were familar with me. I didnt get that new grad attitude from many.
