How to work as Nurse in the USA, from England.

Published

I'm currently at University in England doing my Adult Nursing (Bsc Honours) degree, but after I have finished my degree, I want to move to America to live with my partner. Will my degree even count towards anything over there? I've researched a lot and emailed a few people but I can't seem to find many answers. I obviously want to work as a nurse over in the US, but I have no idea of the process and if this is even possible. I know it might take a while but I'm willing to do whatever I have to, I just wondered if anyone had a better insight into what to do and how to start the process because I feel like I'm not getting anywhere and it's seeming more unrealistic now! Any advice would be much appreciated, thanks. :)

You may find difficulty meeting the requirements for licensure in the US.US nurses are generalist trained, meaning your transcprit needs to show theory and clinical hours for adult, peds, OB/GYN and mental health nursing.Generally you would have to go the Green Card route and that takes about 6 years of processing time and requires an employer willing to wait.

UK training generally falls short in Obstetrics, Mental Health and Paeds. If your transcripts show hours both clinical and theory you may have a chance. Issue will be joining partner as retrogression will add at least 6 or more years to the process and that time doesn't start until you find a employer willing to wait that long. If partner not the same sex and a USC that will make things a bit easier if you marry in regards getting a immigrant visa for the US however nurse requirements will still need to be met
