How did you stay organized in LPN school?

Published

I'm looking for advice on how everyone best stayed organized during the program. Although I have a bachelors degree, I've been out of school for a while and now as a mother, have multiple things to juggle. I'm nervous about staying organized and on top of everything during the LPN program. I'd love to hear some specific advice on what worked/what didn't! Did you have separate binders for each class? Cornell styled notes? I'll take anything! Would like to be as prepared as possible so I don't get lost and/or behind on anything. Thanks!

I will start LVN school on the 20th of January! I would like to know some tips on this subject?, what supplies to get?, and study tips?

Congrats on the decision to start the program! I just finished school and passed nclex the end of October. Here are some tips, hope they help! Get a planner. Write due dates and weekly schedules down. I found this helped way more than putting things in my phone. Start by familiarizing yourself with medical terminology. If you can dissect a word it really helps. Ask questions. Don't be shy about this! Instructors want you to succeed and are there to help! Study using both sides of your brain. Write it down but also draw pictures, diagrams, charts.....whatever helps you remember. I had a different notebook for each subject which helped a ton! You can do this! I am 39, have 2 children and worked through my lpn program. I kept a 4.0 and every sacrifice was totally worth it! I have a job I love and couldn't be happier! Best of luck!!!!!

This is so encouraging, thank you!!! And congrats to you, how exciting :-)

Thank u so much! I am 31, married and have five kids. Last year when I send my last child to school, I decided to go back to school. I thank God every day for this blessing to go to LVN school. I am so excited. At the same time I just want to get everything I will need for school out the way so I can focus on my break before Spring sem. start. Any tips on supplies or a list? I know I need my uniform, stethoscope, scissors, and penlight, it seems like I need more things. Thank u for the other tips about to study medical terms know.

I'm so happy for you!!!! You will be so happy you did this! I always carry pens, a highlighter and a fine point sharpie in addition to my equipment. I got drug cards and a pocket lpn guide. Those helped tons!!!!!!! I'm happy to help you so don't hesitate to ask if you need any help!!!

Thank u. Merry Christmas!

You may want to visit Learning Nurse, this is a nurses resources network. It has a quizzes, self assessments, an abundance of information that guides you in challenging yourself. This will also give you a head start on preparing for the INCLEX. I've been an lpn since 2005 December, and utilize this site still. I've learned that preparedness is key to increase organizational skills. Know your syllabus. Remember, you've already done this by obtaining your bachelor's degree, I'm sure this required the skills you already have. Nursing will assist you in tapping deeper into your talents, once you create a balance between this two. You will develop a healthy practice. Peace, and good luck!

Medical Terminology was one of my prerequisites prior to entering the nursing program. However, I'm sure you can find information at your local library and/or college campus. Online courses are available also. Just be sure there from an accredited entity, or recognized by your Board of Nursing. I purchased drug cards from a college bookstore............
