How to Prepare for Nursing School

Published

Hello everyone,

I just recently got accepted to my nursing program of choice (pursuing BSN). I'm both nervous and excited and because I know next to nothing about ACTUAL nursing from anyone, as I don't know anyone who is a nurse, I'd like to know how I can prepare for this difficult journey through nursing school.

I start my full-time program fall of next year, and I take two 1 credit hour classes in Spring, so I have a ton of time to get myself prepared. I've just recently begun looking through my Anatomy and Physiology textbook again, and I plan to review some medical terminology as well. I've also been looking up simple tutorials on youtube like taking blood pressure, making beds, etc.

Are there any books that you would recommend to read to get ready? Any specific information I should really be extremely clear on such as anatomical terms (anterior, posterior, etc) going into this?

Perhaps I'm getting ahead of myself, but really any kind of feedback would be appreciated. I'd like to know as much going into the program as possible so I'm not struggling as much. What can I do to get myself ready, or even get a leg up on what I'll be heading into.

Thanks in advance!

Congratulations! Thanks for sharing your excitement with us.

In the lead-up time to this Fall, have you considered taking a Medical Terminology course? This will give you a leg up toward understanding the 'language' of health care. You could also spend some time exploring the rich history of nursing and health care via your library.

Good day, Almalexia:

As HouTx shared do consider medical terminology. Check out free online classes you can take at https://www.class-central.com/ Right now, I'm taking https://www.class-central.com/mooc/1297/open2study-chemistry-building-blocks-of-the-world and https://www.coursera.org/course/clinicalterminology (you might still be able to get into the clinical terminology class). Also consider checking out various classes at iTunes University.

Do review https://allnurses.com/pre-nursing-student/how-get-any-846733.html and consider contacting each of your professors for the upcomign semester to see if you can get a copy of the syllabus in advance, and ask for permission to record their lectures for personal/study use only.

Thank you.

Thank you HouTx and pmabraham, I have taken medical terminology, but it would be good to brush up. Thanks!
