How to obtain a US tax code as a non US citizen

Published

I am a UK nurse with 25 years of experience. I am looking to immigrate to the USA. I currently work in a senior leadership role so wish to immigrate at a similar level. The international recruitment agencies only find jobs at entry level, you have a 2 year contract with the agency and they pay a very low salary for the duration of the contract. I have therefore decided to try independently. Before I can do that I need to take the NCLEX exam. To be eligible to take this I have to obtain an individual tax code. What is the easiest way to obtain a US tax code as a nonUS citizen. Has anyone managed to get a job as a senior nurse in the USA.

Thank you that is useful to know.

Which state? Most will accept International nurses and allow you to sit NCLEX, as long as requirements are met, without US SSN or ITIN but may not issue a license without one. Unless you have to pay US taxes then getting a ITIN may be difficult

I'm looking at California. The NCLEX application form asks for a SSN or ITIN and without one of these it won't even consider my application to see if I'm eligible to sit the exam. Are you saying in other states I can sit the NCLEX without obtaining this number? If so which states?

Applicants did not require a SSN to apply to the New York BON in the past, you can check their website to see if that is still the case. Also check Arizona, Michigan, and Texas BONs, as those states also did not require applicants to have a SSN to write the NCLEX in the past.
