May be personal question but I was wondering what the "average" nurses take out in student loans?

Zero.
I paid for my LPN program quarter by quarter, with the aid of Pell Grants and a State scholarship.
I am paying for my RN program course by course as I go along.

Between the first bachelor degreee and the BSN that I just earned, it brings my grand total up to $35,000 It was about $20,000 for just the BSN.
I regret the first degree as I was never able to find a job in that area, but the nursing degree is well worth the money.

But that's for an MSN at a private university full-time. A part-time BSN at a state university will probably be considerably less.
I figured that if I'm going to be a nurse, I'm going all in, all the way.
Perhaps it's good that I'm not into gambling.

I think I took out about $5500 (balance is $3600) for my degree in sociology. I just took out $24,000 for the LVN program I just started. I hope to be working part-time as a CNA in the fall to supplement my 401k that I'm cashing out to live on.

I will end up with a total of $46,000. About four thousand of that is from a prior Associated degree in an unrelated field. The balance is from taking my BSN at a private college. I will graduate in May of 2008 and that price tag is increasingly on my mind.

*** Total cost for RN school was about $3200 (ADN). BSN through University of Wyoming another $5500. GI Bill paid for the ADN and the hospital I work for is paying for the BSN. I work with nurses who owe many tens of thousands. They don't make any more money than I do.

35,000 ADN @ a private college. No waiting list, went by point system, got accepted 1st try, small class rooms, average 5 students at clinicals=priceless in my book.

I went to a junior college for my ADN and was able to pay it all out of pocket with a few scholarships along the way. I was very blessed in this way and HIGHLY recommend ADN programs for this reason. My entire 2 years in the nursing program only cost about $7000. It was wonderful and now I am working on my BSN making RN pay, so no loans there either.
