I'm happy to report I am still a serious candidate for a unit manager position, but now they have scheduled another
interview with another Director in the facility. If I make it past this one then there will another interview scheduled
with the staff of the unit - so that's a total of at least 4. Is this about average?

I've been in nurse manager positions in several agencies. common interviews have been director ( future boss), CNO ( sometimes), staff, peer managers, physician directors of the units. Facilities cna range up or down from there. The interviews set you up for success. There is nothing worse that having somone say post-hire that they were not given a chance to have input. Interviews also allow the applicant to expore their own 'fit' with those they meet, and to establish an initial relationship. :)
