How long did you stay at your first nursing job, and if it wasn't a med-surg position.. how long did you stay on the med-surg floor before you ventured out? please tell me about your experience :)

I have stayed at my first nursing job 3 years and counting. I work in the NICU and wouldn't want it any other way! :)
You started at the NICU? How easy was it to get that job? My friend landed a job at the NICU where I'm going to be working... and it's her first job too. I think it's really nice :) I'll be on the surgical floor.
I knew I wanted NICU while I did clinicals in nursing school. I am not sure how easy it was to get in NICU as a new grad, but I feel lucky for getting in the hospital I wanted. I applied to 3 NICUs and got offers from 2. Apparently it is a popular specialty and I was hired before the recession hit. The one I went with I had met the nursing manager at a job fair first and got her business card and have a chat with her. This helped me later in the interview process because I could directly communicate with the nursing manager instead of through HR. I hope you enjoy your nursing experience on the surgical floor!

I worked medsurg for 3 years and then transferred to ICU in the same hospital. I'd never have it any other way. Learned a ton on medsurg, but happy to be gone. I'm very thankful for my experiences there and they got me where I am today.

I stayed at my first nursing job 9mo full-time. I was offered my dream job at a community health center so went to that full-time, but stayed PRN at the first job (med-surg) for another two years.

What in the world? 45 minutes? Would you mind giving details? If not, I completely understand :)
