How is the Job Market in the Houston area for New Grads?

Published

I am from Long Island in New York and I am having a hard time to find a job as a new grad RN ( Dec 2012). I applied all over the 5 boroughs in NY, Long Island, and Westchester county. I have been looking things up about Houston, Texas and it seems like a fun place to live. I love sunshine and warm weather and I am young 22 year old female (love a good nightlife on my off days too). So If the job market is better there I figured it will be a great opportunity for me to relocate. Also I don't drive yet so information about public transit will be greatly appreciated (I need the job to get a car lol). So Can anyone tell me which hospitals are hiring new grads in the Houston area? I have no experience besides clinical rotations. If not Houston, Austin is also another option. Thanks :cat:

I think you are a little late for new grad positions in Houston. Most of the hospitals started posting and hiring for new grad positions in March/April. However most hospitals do have another new grad hire in October. So I would encourage you to check then! I graduated with a large class and most of us have jobs already. So I don't think the job market is bad at all here in houston! As far as public transit we have the metro rails. If you live close to one of the stops you can get anywhere you need to go in Houston!

Really? So what about the May Grads? Will there be new grad positions for them? I don't mind applying now with the May grads. Also don't they need to take the NCLEX first. Do you know any particular hospitals to watch for? I assume that if they hire in September/October, applications are available in June/July...(am I right?)

The April/May grads in this area are already/have already landed jobs to start this summer. I would assume apps will be open this summer for October starts. I would call the hospital nurse recruiters to find out! I believe Ben Taub (Harris health systems), memorial Hermann, and MD Anderson do October-ish new grads. The ones I'm not sure about are St. Luke's, Methodist, St. Joseph's, Texas Children's.

New grad positions are filled several months before graduation for start dates after NCLEX is passed.

Austin is one of the most difficult job markets for new grad in the nation. Houston is a bit better. The next round of internships will start posting in October. Texas is fairly saturated with new grads. Don't move until you have a written job offer with a firm start date in hand.

Are you a BSN grad? If not, you will have a very hard time landing an acute care job in any large Tx city. If you are interested in coastal locations, I suggest you take a look at CHRISTUS Spohn in Corpus Christi. They are new-grad friendly.

PP is correct about the saturation of new grads in most TX cities. You will have better luck in smaller cities & rural areas.

I agree - please don't make any move unless you have a job to go to. And please be very certain about your ability to cope with relocation before making the leap. It's not only distance, but also climate, culture, etc. It will be a drastic change & probably very difficult for you if you don't have a support system nearby.

I was a new grad May 2012 with my ADN, and I moved to Texas June 26th and was offered a hospital job on June 27th 20 miles south of Houston. I didn't get a call back from any recruiters until I had a Texas address on my resume. Luckily I knew other people in Texas that let me use their address until I moved. When I was hired there was a girl with her BSN that graduated a whole year ahead of me who was going to be starting her first nursing job. There are a lot of new grads in this area, but it is possible...

Houston is saturated with new grads. During my job search I saw the same new grads every where I went. I only got two interviews in Houston and 1 in Conroe. I got 6 interviews in Dallas and a job.
